The United Arab Emirates is a federation of seven emirates on the eastern edge of the Arabian Peninsula, between the Arabian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. Abu Dhabi is the capital; Dubai is the best known of its cities. This is a country of contrasts, where skyscrapers and man-made islands stand beside old quarters, forts and souks, and beyond the cities lie deserts, oases and the Hajar Mountains, whose highest point is Jebel Hafeet.

For travellers, the Emirates means world-class beach resorts on the Gulf, outstanding restaurants and shopping, and a growing cultural scene: the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Louvre Abu Dhabi on Saadiyat Island, Dubai’s historic Bastakiya district and Burj Khalifa. Families have waterparks, theme parks such as Ferrari World and even an indoor ski slope, Ski Dubai.

The climate is dry and tropical: summer averages run at 35–40 °C with peaks near 50 °C, while winters are a mild 16–20 °C, and rain is rare. The best time to visit is from October to May. The Emirates suit a short city break as well as a long beach holiday with children, and couples in search of polished, luxurious service.
