United Kingdom
The United Kingdom brings together England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, and covers most of the British Isles. From the south coast to the far north of Scotland is about 1,000 km, from Lizard Point in Cornwall to Dunnet Head. The Hebrides trail along Scotland’s west coast, Orkney and Shetland lie to the north-east, and the Isle of Wight and the Isles of Scilly sit off the south.
London is one of the great world capitals: royal parks, world-class museums, West End theatres and a restaurant scene that sets the pace for Europe. Beyond it lies another Britain — the country estates and green downs of Hampshire, the gothic skyline of Edinburgh, the lochs and glens of Perthshire, St Andrews, the home of golf, and the wild reaches of the Scottish Highlands, all heather-clad slopes and whisky distilleries.
The weather is changeable in every season, so warm, waterproof layers are worth packing even in summer. The most rewarding months are May to September, when the days are long and gardens are at their best, while London holds its appeal all year. Britain suits lovers of culture and history, golfers, couples and families, and anyone drawn to an unhurried life in the countryside.
