Chewton Glen

About this hotel

General information

Chewton Glen is a five-star country house hotel and spa built around an 18th-century manor: land and premises called Chewton Glen House appear in records as early as 1732. The 130-acre estate of woodland, gardens and parkland lies on the edge of the New Forest, a short walk from the sea. Captain Frederick Marryat, author of The Children of the New Forest, is believed to have stayed here while visiting his brother, Colonel George Marryat, and the Marryat Suite and several room names recall him and his characters.

The Duval family first opened the house as a hotel, and in 1966 Martin and Brigitte Skan bought it and built its international reputation. Today it belongs to Iconic Hotels & Resorts, part of the family-owned L+R group. The main estate holds 72 rooms and suites, with 14 treehouses in a wooded valley, alongside a spa and country club, two restaurants, a cookery school, golf, tennis and event spaces for up to 140 guests.

Location

The hotel lies in New Milton, Hampshire, on the edge of the New Forest National Park near England’s south coast. A path through the Chewton Bunny nature reserve reaches the sea in around 20 minutes, where beach walks run between Highcliffe and Barton-on-Sea. It is easily reached by road, rail and air.

Spa

Chewton Glen Spa & Country Club brings together a 17-metre indoor pool, an outdoor pool, a hydrotherapy pool and an outdoor whirlpool, steam rooms, saunas, a gym, classes and treatment rooms. Massages, facials, holistic therapies, rituals and nail care begin with a consultation, using Natura Bissé, OSKIA and the hotel’s own Chewton Glen Spa & Body Collection, inspired by the forest and coast. Hotel guests have full use of the facilities.

Sports & leisure

The estate suits every pace, and a weekly complimentary programme covers part of what is on offer:

  • on the estate — a 9-hole par-3 golf course, indoor and outdoor tennis courts, pickleball, croquet, walking and jogging trails, a walled kitchen garden and nursery gardens
  • with instructors — clay pigeon and rifle shooting, archery, axe throwing, sheep walking and falconry
  • in the New Forest — guided mountain-bike tours, hikes, runs and private riding lessons at stables 15 minutes from the hotel
  • on the water — day boats and charters with The Boat Club, kayaking, paddle boarding and skippered RIB trips on the Solent
  • hands-on classes at The Kitchen Cookery School, including family sessions
For children

The Beehive Kids Club gives younger guests their own purpose-built, treehouse-style space for crafts, games and seasonal adventures. Families also have child-friendly dining, cookery lessons, dedicated swimming times, nature rambles and treasure hunts, while the Coach House suites, the Hotel Suites with bunk beds and the Treehouse Loft Suite are designed with children in mind.

Restaurants & bars

Restaurants and bars:

  • The Dining Room — seasonal menus, Chewton Glen classics and produce from the kitchen garden, served across several spaces including the Wine Room and Summer House, with garden views
  • The Kitchen by James Martin — a relaxed restaurant beside the cookery school, with wood-fired pizzas, chargrills, burgers and salads from James Martin’s menu
  • The Colonel's Bar — oak-panelled and warmed by a fire, with cocktails, rare spirits and seasonal bites
  • Pool Bar — light lunches at the spa
  • Afternoon Tea — a classic English tea with views across the estate

Private dining rooms host celebrations and business dinners.

Swimming

The coast is about 20 minutes on foot through the Chewton Bunny nature reserve, with shoreline walks between Highcliffe and Barton-on-Sea. On site, the spa’s 17-metre indoor pool and its outdoor pool are the places to swim.

Pets

Well-behaved dogs are welcome in selected accommodation – the treehouses, the Hot Tub Hotel Suites and the ground-floor Croquet Lawn Rooms – when confirmed in advance. Dogs should weigh under 40 kg, be over a year old, fully trained and vaccinated, including against rabies, and kept on a lead in the grounds; they may join owners in the lounges, lobby, terraces and at selected tables in The Kitchen.

Rooms

The 72 individually designed rooms and suites pair antique and contemporary furniture with modern fabrics and technology, with family suites also set in the former Coach House. In a wooded valley on the estate stand 14 treehouses with private decks and outdoor hot tubs.

In each room

Rooms have Wi-Fi, a TV, a safe, tea and coffee (a Nespresso machine in some), a hairdryer, bathrobes and slippers, bathroom amenities and daily housekeeping, plus complimentary spa access; breakfast is delivered to the treehouses.
