The Langham, London

About this hotel

General information

The Langham opened in 1865 as Europe’s first purpose-built Grand Hotel. It set a new standard of luxury, with electric light and hydraulic lifts that were novelties at the time, and it became the first hotel in the world to serve afternoon tea, in its Palm Court. More than 160 years on, it remains one of London’s landmark addresses, known for its hospitality and its signature shade of pink.

Today there are 380 rooms and suites, six restaurants and bars, the Chuan Body + Soul spa and 23 event spaces totalling 2,509 m², including a grand ballroom. The culinary director is the two-Michelin-starred chef Michel Roux Jr. Recent years have brought new suites, the British tavern The Wigmore and the spa; the hotel holds two Michelin Keys and a Forbes Five-Star rating.

Location

The hotel stands on Portland Place at the top of Regent Street in the West End, on the edge of Marylebone and a short walk from Mayfair. Oxford Circus Underground is a five-minute walk and Bond Street ten; Regent’s Park and London Zoo lie a short walk north, and Regent Street Cinema is next door. Heathrow (32.8 km) is about 40 minutes by car, Gatwick (48.3 km) about 1 hour 10 minutes, and Paddington and Waterloo stations 10–15 minutes. Private transfers run in Mercedes-Benz V-Class vehicles.

Spa

Chuan Body + Soul is an underground spa whose treatments and products follow the Five Elements theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine: a short questionnaire before each session guides the choice of product. The menu includes the signature Chuan Harmony treatment, acupressure-based massage, sessions with practitioners from the Asanté Academy of Chinese Medicine (acupuncture, herbal medicine, tuina), medical-grade pedicures and vitamin IV drips. After a swim there are steam rooms, a sauna and a contemplation lounge serving seasonal teas, and a Sleep Matters by Chuan programme focuses on rest.

Sports & leisure

Guests have round-the-clock access to a gym with cardio machines, free weights and two Peloton bikes, and personal training is available. A 16-metre indoor pool fills a former bank vault. On the first floor, the Sauce by The Langham cookery school, created with Michel Roux Jr, runs short foundation classes and masterclasses in pasta, bread, French puddings and steak, as well as a day with the chef himself. The concierge can arrange private screenings at the neighbouring Regent Street Cinema.

For children

Children receive Theodore amenities — a teddy bear, bag, bathrobe and slippers — and Family Rooms can have a children’s teepee on request. Palm Court serves a dedicated afternoon tea for guests aged 12 and under, The Wigmore has a children’s menu, and the Sauce cookery school runs baking classes for children. Under-16s may use the pool with an adult at set hours, and on Saturday mornings a family Splash in the Pool session brings out pool toys. The hotel can arrange third-party babysitting and private family film screenings.

Restaurants & bars

Six venues span everything from Victorian tea to world-class cocktails.

  • Palm Court — the birthplace of hotel afternoon tea; a Victorian-inspired tea by Michel Roux and executive pastry chef Andrew Gravett, plus breakfast and all-day dining, JING teas and daily live piano
  • Artesian — a cocktail bar named after the artesian well beneath the hotel, four times named best in the world by The World’s 50 Best Bars
  • The Wigmore — a modern British pub in a former banking hall, with reimagined pub food, wine on tap, cask ales and craft beer
  • Sale e Pepe Mare — a seafood-led Italian restaurant inspired by the Italian Riviera: crudo, pasta and the signature Milanese
  • Sale e Pepe Mare Terrazza — an open-air space in the historic mid-18th-century courtyard, with pizza, cicchetti, wine and cocktails
  • Private Dining by Roux — private dinners and celebrations with classic European cooking given a modern turn

Guests in club rooms and suites also use The Langham Club lounge, with breakfast, afternoon refreshments, cocktails and canapés from Michel Roux Jr’s team.

Pets

Dogs are welcome, one per room or suite, for a fee. They may join their owners in The Wigmore and Sale e Pepe Mare but not in the other restaurants, The Langham Club lounge or the spa (assistance dogs excepted); in public areas they stay on a lead and they are not left alone in rooms.
