About this hotel
General information
A hotel has stood at this corner of Mayfair since 1815, when The Prince of Saxe-Coburg Hotel opened here, known to everyone simply as The Coburg. During the First World War it was renamed in honour of Queen Victoria’s son Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn, and the present building on Carlos Place dates from 1897. A £70 million restoration completed in 2007 added a new wing, the Aman Spa and a Japanese garden, and since 2011 Tadao Ando’s water sculpture Silence has shimmered outside the entrance.
Guy Oliver, Michael Blair and David Collins Studio shaped the interiors, where original art, parquet floors, period fireplaces and fine craftsmanship sit comfortably with modern technology. The lobby staircase so impressed Ralph Lauren that he had it replicated in his Madison Avenue flagship. The hotel is best known for Hélène Darroze’s three-Michelin-starred restaurant and the Connaught Bar, one of the most celebrated cocktail bars anywhere, and suite guests are looked after by a personal butler around the clock. It is managed by Maybourne.
Location
The hotel sits on quiet Carlos Place, just off Mount Street in the heart of Mayfair, a five-minute walk from Bond Street Underground station and ten from Green Park, with Bond Street’s boutiques and Hyde Park close at hand. Heathrow is about 45 minutes by car, Gatwick about 1 hour 20 minutes and St Pancras International (Eurostar) around 25 minutes. Chauffeured transfers run in Mercedes and BMW cars, and guests in The Mews and higher suite categories can arrange Flexjet helicopter transfers to the Battersea heliport.
Spa
The Aman Spa was the first of its kind outside an Aman resort. It has five softly lit treatment rooms, each with its own music system, a pool, an aromatic steam room, a relaxation lounge and a private gym. Treatments follow three pathways — Grounding, Purification and Nourishment — and a Gong Fu Cha tea ceremony with rare aged teas can be arranged. The spa, pool and steam room are open to every hotel guest.
Sports & leisure
The private fitness centre within the Aman Spa, reserved for hotel guests and spa members, has Technogym equipment, free weights and core training, with personal training and sports massage by appointment. The concierge arranges gallery tours of the neighbourhood with an experienced curator, private appointments at Mount Street boutiques and tables at London’s most sought-after new restaurants.
For children
Many rooms and suites can be connected, and the two-bedroom suites sleep up to five. The Aman Spa pool sets aside dedicated family swim times.
