Balearic Islands
The Balearic archipelago lies in the Mediterranean east of mainland Spain, and each island has a character of its own. Mallorca is the largest: Palma’s Gothic cathedral towers over the harbour, and the UNESCO-listed Serra de Tramuntana runs along the north-west coast, sheltering the stone villages of Deià, Valldemossa and Sóller. Ibiza pairs a fortified old town, also UNESCO-listed, with quiet coves and celebrated sunsets, while calmer Menorca and Formentera are loved for their clear water.
The beach season runs roughly from May to October; July and August are hot, while spring and autumn are best for hiking and cycling. The islands suit couples and honeymooners, families, sailors and anyone who wants to combine the sea with good food and mountain scenery.
