La Residencia, A Belmond Hotel

About this hotel

General information

La Residencia spreads across a hillside on the edge of Deià, the artists' village in the Serra de Tramuntana on Mallorca's north-west coast, with mountains rising behind and the Mediterranean below. At its core are twin manor houses dating back to the 17th century, once home to Cistercian monks whose irrigation channels turned the slopes into orchards and olive groves. Stone buildings, terraces and gardens have grown up around them, looking out over the village's terracotta roofs.

Art sets the tone. The hotel holds 33 works by Joan Miró, a local collection first gathered by the painter George Sheridan, the Sa Tafona gallery, and painting and sculpture studios with a resident artist. Its 67 rooms, suites and villa are furnished with Mallorcan antiques, and the estate has three restaurants, indoor and outdoor pools, a spa, tennis courts and its own donkeys for walks along the trails. It is part of the Belmond collection.

Location

The hotel stands on the edge of Deià, a village of around 600 people below the peaks of the Serra de Tramuntana, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Palma airport is about 45 minutes away by car, Sóller and Valldemossa roughly 20 minutes, Port de Sóller 26 minutes and the Sa Foradada peninsula 8 minutes. The small cove of Cala Deià is a 20–30-minute walk downhill. The concierge arranges private transfers, and valet parking is complimentary for guests.

Spa

La Residencia Spa is set into the hillside among centuries-old olive trees. It has six treatment rooms, three with their own terraces, an outdoor terrace for couples' massages, a sauna, steam room and ice bath, a heated indoor pool, a hair salon and a fitness centre. Treatments use Natura Bissé, 111SKIN and Margaret Dabbs London products; signatures include Olive Activator, Citrus Siesta and Island Delight, alongside massages, body treatments and facials.

Sports & leisure

Activities draw on the mountains, the sea and the village's creative streak.

  • Tennis courts with a hitting wall and pro shop; coaching by Lux Tennis, complimentary group classes and court hire
  • Yoga, Pilates and meditation in the gardens

Families are welcome. In high season the Smile Club runs activities for children aged 4–12. Most rooms and suites can take a rollaway bed or sofa bed for a child, and families can join a mocktail-making class together.

Restaurants & bars

Cooking is built around Mallorcan produce and the seasons.

  • El Olivo — fine dining with seasonal Mallorcan tasting menus, including a vegetarian one, a terrace facing the mountains, a candlelit dining room and a long wine list with rare vintages
  • Restaurante Miró — all-day Mediterranean cooking with a Mallorcan accent, served among works by Joan Miró and on a terrace above the village roofs
  • Bar Miró — cocktails, specialty coffee and freshly baked cakes
  • Tramuntana Grill — poolside grill cooking meat, fish and vegetables in a Josper charcoal oven, with light dishes and a pool bar
  • Son Fony — breakfast, with a buffet of local produce and à la carte dishes
  • The Mirador — private candlelit dinners along the poet's walk, with coastal views and live guitar

In-room dining is available all day.

Swimming

There is no beach on site. The outdoor pool lies in the gardens beside Tramuntana Grill and a heated indoor pool is in the spa; several suites and the villa have private pools. The nearest sea is the small cove of Cala Deià, a 20–30-minute walk downhill with an uphill return; in summer a shuttle runs between the hotel and the cove.

Pets

Small dogs and cats weighing under 10 kg are welcome in every room category.
