Montenegro
Montenegro is a small country on the southern Adriatic where mountains drop straight into the sea. Its coast of roughly three hundred kilometres pairs the winding Bay of Kotor, framed by steep slopes, with the sand and pebble beaches of the Budva Riviera. A few hours inland lie canyons, mountain lakes and the national parks of Durmitor and Lovćen.
The old towns of Kotor and Budva keep their Venetian walls, narrow lanes and churches, while the island village of Sveti Stefan has become the emblem of the coast. Tivat, with the Porto Montenegro marina, and the Luštica peninsula bring a contemporary yachting rhythm, and Herceg Novi is known for its gardens and mild climate.
Summers are hot and dry, the sea season runs from June to September, and spring and autumn suit walks through the old towns and mountain excursions. Montenegro appeals to couples, families and travellers drawn to a mix of sea, mountains and an unhurried Mediterranean pace.
