About this hotel
General information
Mamula Island by Banyan Tree occupies a circular fortress on a small island at the entrance to the Bay of Kotor. The fort was built in the 1850s under the Austro-Hungarian general Lazar Mamula, and its restoration kept the original layout: the fortress arches became the defining motif of the interiors, with stone walls set against solid oak and natural fabrics.
There are 32 rooms and suites, each looking out to the Adriatic. The closed ring of walls around a central courtyard of pools gives the island a strong sense of seclusion, while a seasonal cultural programme in Studio Mamula and Atelier Mamula adds a rhythm of its own. In 2024 it was named to Condé Nast's Hot List of the best new hotels in the world.
Location
The island lies at the mouth of the Bay of Kotor, 1.7 km from the Luštica peninsula and about 6 km from Herceg Novi. Guests cross free of charge by boat, a five-minute ride from the Mirišta landing on Luštica. Tivat Airport is 22 km away (about 50 minutes by car to the landing, or 10 minutes by helicopter), Dubrovnik 35 km and Podgorica 103 km. The island has a helipad, and boats can also be arranged directly from Tivat Airport's water terminal.
Spa
Banyan Tree Spa sits within the stone fort, with two treatment rooms and a couples' suite, two ritual rooms, Finnish and herbal saunas, a steam room, a halotherapy room, a flotation tank and an experience shower. Treatments draw on local plants and oils and on the brand's 8 Pillars of Wellbeing, delivered by therapists trained at the Banyan Tree Spa & Wellbeing Academy. Yoga, meditation, breathwork and sound healing sessions complete the programme.

Restaurants & bars
The island has three restaurants and a bar:
- Parasol — Mediterranean cooking and seafood in the fortress courtyard beside three pools, for hotel guests only
- Kamena — seasonal Mediterranean and local dishes built on regional produce, from breakfast to dinner
- Celeste — an open-air terrace on the edge of the island serving regional and international food
- Pinea Mixology Bar — a low-lit speakeasy with a marble bar and crafted cocktails
Swimming
Three pools sit within the circular walls of the fort, next to Parasol, alongside jet pools. The hotel has a private beach, and the sea surrounds the island on every side.
