Northern Europe

Estonia

Estonia is a compact Nordic-Baltic country on the Baltic Sea and Gulf of Finland — forests, bogs, a long coast and over 2,000 islands, easily reached from Ukraine. Tallinn’s UNESCO-listed Old Town is among Northern Europe’s best-preserved medieval towns. In the Lower Town the Gothic Town Hall faces Town Hall Square, St Olaf’s Church rises over Pikk Street, walls and towers run from Fat Margaret to Viru Gate, and St Catherine’s Passage hides among old merchant houses. Toompea Hill’s Kohtuotsa and Patkuli platforms, by St Mary’s Cathedral, overlook red roofs and the bay.

Kadriorg’s park and Baroque palace lead to the Kumu Art Museum; Telliskivi, wooden Kalamaja and the Rotermann Quarter bring galleries and cafés, and the Seaplane Harbour museum fills seaside hangars. New Nordic cooking leads a lively restaurant scene. Day trips reach Lahemaa National Park’s manors, bog boardwalks and coast, and the Keila-Joa and Jägala waterfalls; beyond lie Pärnu’s beach, Haapsalu, Saaremaa and Muhu islands, and university town Tartu.

Taste rye bread, kama, Baltic sprats, smoked fish, Vana Tallinn liqueur and local beer. The climate is temperate: summers usually mild, roughly 19–22 °C, with midsummer white nights, winters cold and often snowy. Late May to September suits coast and walking; winter brings Town Hall Square’s Christmas market. Estonia suits city breaks, couples, architecture, design and food lovers, and short Baltic or Nordic trips.
