About this hotel
General information
The Setai Miami Beach holds an oceanfront stretch of Collins Avenue in South Beach, where Miami Beach Art Deco meets Asian serenity. Its historic building was designed by Henry Hohauser and opened in 1937 as the Dempsey-Vanderbilt hotel; beside it rises a 40-storey tower of Ocean Suites. Jean-Michel Gathy shaped the interiors with teak, natural textures and floor-to-ceiling glass, and the lobby floor was laid with bricks salvaged from Shanghai’s Old City.
There are 157 suites, split between the Art Deco building and the Ocean Suites with Atlantic views. By day the courtyard, with its dark-wood pergolas and still reflecting pond, is a place of calm; by night it becomes the stage for the Asian Night Bazaar, with aerialists and a resident DJ. Three pools kept at different temperatures, a private beach, a Valmont spa, three restaurants and gallery shops complete the address.
Location
The hotel sits on the ocean in South Beach, on Collins Avenue at 20th Street, within walking distance of the Miami Beach Convention Center, Lincoln Road, the Bass Museum of Art and the New World Symphony. Ocean Suites guests are met with transfers from Miami and Fort Lauderdale airports, and a house car handles short trips nearby.
Spa
Valmont for The Spa at The Setai works exclusively with the Swiss Valmont range. It has seven treatment rooms with ocean and city views, five of them couples’ suites, changing rooms with Finnish saunas, steam showers and a cold plunge, and a Valmont boutique. The signature Majestic Facial, a 90-minute ritual exclusive to the hotel, combines Japanese kobido massage with the l’Elixir des Glaciers line.
Sports & leisure
The 24-hour fitness centre has Peloton bikes, Technogym equipment, a Pilates reformer and free weights, alongside Finnish saunas and a cold plunge. Complimentary sunrise yoga takes place on the beach on Friday, Saturday and Sunday mornings, and private yoga, meditation, mat Pilates and personal training can be arranged. Guests can borrow bicycles from The Setai by Republic fleet, and the Les Clefs d’Or concierges plan time around Miami Beach.
For children
Families have their own pool, the warmest of the three at 32 °C; children under 16 are not admitted to the spa and fitness areas.
Restaurants & bars
Three restaurants and a bar are gathered around the courtyard and the beach:
- Jaya — South and South-East Asian cooking by chef Vijayudu Veena: Indian, Chinese, Thai and Balinese dishes, tandoor and Peking duck; breakfast, lunch, dinner and a caviar-and-champagne weekend brunch
- Japón — contemporary Japanese cuisine with an extensive sake list, the private Kyoto Room with its Kyoto Bar and an open-air courtyard; dinner only
- Ocean Grill — Mediterranean-Italian cooking, grilled meats and seafood in an open-air beachfront setting; lunch and dinner
- Jo’s Bar — the reimagined bar between Jaya and Japón, with crafted cocktails, small plates and a list of Japanese whiskies
Drinks and light bites are also served by the pools and on the beach, and in-suite dining runs 24 hours.
Swimming
The hotel has its own stretch of white-sand beach with full service: loungers, umbrellas, daybeds, drinks and light bites. Three infinity pools run east to west: a lap pool at 24 °C, a central pool at 29 °C and a family pool at 32 °C, with 16 cabanas around them.
Pets
Dogs up to 9 kg are welcome; service animals are accepted on request.
