General information
LUZ Culinary Wine Lodge is a small country retreat ten minutes' drive from José Ignacio, set on 14 hectares of countryside between the Atlantic and open farmland, with pine woods, its own vineyard, gently curving olive groves and a lagoon. Its eight suites, no two alike, have calm, rustic interiors with soft lines and colours that take their cue from traditional Moroccan architecture.
Food and wine are the heart of the place. The NUR restaurant cooks with seasonal local produce, the vineyard grows Tannat, Merlot and Tempranillo for wines bottled under the LUZ name, and the olives are pressed for the lodge's own oil. With roughly one member of staff for every guest, service is highly personal: guests can step into the kitchen and cook with the team, learn signature drinks and coffee from the bartender-barista, or help tend the vines and olive trees.
Location
The lodge stands in the countryside of Maldonado department, a 10-minute drive from José Ignacio, a small fishing village on a lighthouse peninsula with the calm, sunset-facing Playa Mansa on one side and the surf beach of Playa Brava on the other. Punta del Este is about 40 km away.
Spa
Massages are arranged on request and yoga sessions are held wherever on the land a guest prefers. Quiet spots looking over the vineyard and the lagoon are set aside for unwinding.
Sports & leisure
On the estate and beyond:
- A heated 30 m swimming pool
- A tennis court and a volleyball court
- Bikes, walking trails and running routes through the vineyard
- Stand-up paddleboards, canoes and rowing on the lagoon
- Yoga and workouts outdoors or in the suite
- Cooking with the kitchen team, cocktail and coffee sessions with the bartender-barista, work in the vineyard and olive grove, and olive oil tastings
- Off site on request – water skiing, kitesurfing, windsurfing, surf lessons, kayaking, wildlife and plant spotting, and winery visits
Restaurants & bars
Dining revolves around the NUR restaurant. Breakfast is à la carte, with the lodge's own yoghurt, fresh juices, house infusions and speciality coffee roasted in Maldonado, and picnic hampers can be packed for the lagoon or the vines. All dining experiences are booked in advance.
- NUR – signature cooking with international influences and local ingredients; tapas and sharing plates by the pool by day and night, looking over the lagoon, olives and vines, with lunch from midday to 15:30
- Forest – a banquet in the pine wood at a 9-metre table for 24, with a tasting menu in which each course stands for a region of Uruguay
- Beef Omakase – an intimate counter dinner with the chef devoted to Uruguayan beef
- Chef's Table – 18–20 dishes served at the chef's work table beside the fire
- Bar – classic and experimental cocktails, house liqueurs and vermouths; wine is chosen in the cellar with the staff, including the lodge's own LUZ, LUZ Rosé and the reserve LUZ de Tierra, LUZ de Cielo and LUZ de Mar
Swimming
Swimming centres on the heated 30 m pool, with views over the lagoon, the olive trees and the vineyard. The nearest ocean beaches, Playa Mansa and Playa Brava, are at José Ignacio, a 10-minute drive away.
Rooms
The eight suites each have a private entrance and their own particular touch – lagoon, vineyard or garden views, a masonry bathtub, an outdoor shower, a fireplace, a tropical patio or a wooden deck. Suite 8 has a Nordic tub on its terrace, and Suite 5 has a private living room and connects with Suite 6.
Each suite has a super king bed, central air conditioning and heating, no screens but a SONOS speaker, linen robes, cotton bed linen, locally made organic toiletries with olive oil, rosemary and Tannat extract, a hair dryer and a safe.

A suite with a private entrance, a king bed and a private bathroom, for two guests; all eight suites are sold as one category and assigned on arrival.
