Abadía Retuerta LeDomaine

About this hotel

General information

Abadía Retuerta LeDomaine occupies the Abbey of Santa María de Retuerta, a Romanesque monastery founded by the Premonstratensian order in 1146 on the banks of the Duero. The restoration kept the original structures and the spirit of monastic life: the cloister, the chapter house and the old refectory are now part of the hotel, and more than 8,000 m² of historic space holds just 30 rooms and suites. A collection of Renaissance, Baroque and modern art runs through the building, from period furniture in the rooms to sculpture in the gardens, including a steel work by Eduardo Chillida.

Around the abbey lies a 700-hectare estate of pine forest, lavender paths and 193 hectares of vineyards. Its winery revived the monks’ winemaking tradition and produces single-vineyard wines under the estate’s own Protected Designation of Origin. Service is built around a round-the-clock butler team, and the estate is certified B Corp and Green Globe.

Location

The estate sits near the village of Sardón de Duero in the province of Valladolid, in the Ribera del Duero wine country, beside the Duero river. Madrid is less than two hours away by car, and high-speed trains link Madrid and Valladolid in about an hour. The hotel arranges private transfers from Madrid, Bilbao or Barcelona and a shuttle on request, and has its own helipad for arrivals by air.

Spa

Santuario Wellness & Spa fills more than 1,000 m² of the abbey’s former stables — below ground, yet lit by daylight through several entrances. Its water is drawn from a 120 m well and purified by reverse osmosis. Facilities include an indoor pool with a cascade beneath a skylight, a relaxation room overlooking an inner courtyard and a private Spa Suite for two with sauna, steam bath, Jacuzzi, experience showers and its own lounge. The signature Spa Sommelier treatments take their cue from wine — massages with individually chosen oil blends, a ritual with linen pindas filled with grape seeds, body wraps — alongside Vinoble Cosmetics rituals, Oriental & Mind-Body sessions and multi-day wellness retreats.

Sports & leisure

The 24-hour fitness centre has TRX, Kinesis and Technogym cardio machines, and the yoga room is watched over by a 16th-century Thai Buddha; yoga among the vines, water yoga and mindfulness are led by instructors on request. Bicycles are free for guests. The estate runs a full programme of experiences:

  • wine — winery visits, full-range and barrel tastings, historic vintages from the Cueva de los Monjes, an oenological tour of the estate, the Aroma Lab and a hands-on harvest
  • nature — horseback rides, e-bike picnics, dawn hot-air balloon flights, falconry, beekeeping with a honey tasting, lavender walks, flower-arranging workshops and stargazing by telescope in the Monks’ Garden
  • art and history — tours of the abbey and the Living with Art experience, plus sightseeing flights from the helipad
For children

Families can take the Two-bedroom Master Suite, whose second bedroom has two single beds. Children under 12 are not admitted to the Santuario; those aged 12–16 may use it from 11:00 to 13:00 with a parent or guardian, for treatments designed for younger guests only.

Restaurants & bars

The kitchens draw on El Huerto de los Monjes, the estate’s organic garden, and sourdough comes from the in-house bakery.

  • Refectorio — fine dining in the monks’ former refectory: two tasting menus built on local producers and the estate garden, paired with the estate’s wines
  • Vinoteca — a contemporary Castilian tavern above La Cueva, the old monastic storehouse that now keeps the winery’s private collection; sharing plates from market and garden produce, with up to 40 wines by the glass
  • Calicata Terroir Bar — an open-air wine bar at the winery among vines and pines, serving local dishes with the estate’s wines; summer season
  • Terrace of the Hospedería — a guests-only garden terrace facing the abbey, with regional classics, signature cocktails and a telescope for the night sky; summer season
  • Cloister Garden — a summer setting in the cloister for Vinoteca’s menu and à la carte breakfast
  • Chapter Room — a cocktail lounge in the 12th-century Romanesque chapter house
  • Pool Bar — vineyard views and cocktails built around the estate’s wines; summer season
Swimming

An outdoor pool set among the vineyards, with views of the abbey and its lavender, opens in the summer season; a pool butler brings fresh water and a cooling mist, and lunch is served on the neighbouring Hospedería terrace. All year, guests can use the indoor pool in the Santuario, with its cascade and natural light.

Pets

Rooms with a pet are booked directly with the hotel, which confirms availability. Pets are allowed only on the Hospedería terrace, in the Cloister Garden, the Chapter Room and Calicata; they may not enter the spa, the pool, the gym, the winery, Refectorio, the Pool Bar or the hotel’s vehicles.

Rooms

The 30 rooms — 27 doubles and three suites — are set in the monastery’s former guesthouse, and every one looks out over the vineyards. Stays include à la carte breakfast, round-the-clock butler service, a historical tour of the abbey and access to the Santuario by prior reservation.
