About this hotel
General information
InterContinental Dominica Cabrits Resort & Spa lies on Douglas Bay at the edge of Cabrits National Park, just north of Portsmouth on Dominica’s north-west coast. The Caribbean Sea is on one side and forested slopes rise on the other, so most of the 131 rooms, suites and villa suites look out either to the water or to the mountains. Three-storey wings sit among gardens, and the interiors use greens and blues that echo the rainforest and the sea beyond the windows.
The resort is built for unhurried stays, for couples and families alike: a beach of its own, four pools with a swim-up bar, the Téya Wellness Sanctuary with its separate treatment pavilions, two tennis courts, a kids’ club and several restaurants cooking with the local fishermen’s catch and produce from the resort’s own garden. The concierge arranges trips to the island’s waterfalls, hot springs and national parks, as well as whale-watching boat trips and diving.
Location
The resort stands on Douglas Bay within Cabrits National Park, close to Portsmouth on Dominica’s north-west coast. Dominica’s main airport on the north-east coast is about 32 km away; the hotel arranges car transfers on request from the airport or from the ferry terminal in Roseau. Ferries from Guadeloupe and Martinique take about two hours. Parking on site is free.
Spa
The Téya Wellness Sanctuary is set among greenery above the sea, with separate treatment pavilions, single and couples’ rooms, jacuzzis, steam rooms, a sauna and an open-air yoga pavilion. The menu covers a tailored classic massage, aroma, deep-tissue and hot-stone massages, coconut-and-sugar scrubs, facials, manicures and pedicures, and scrub-and-massage sessions for couples. Teas and water infused with herbs from the garden are served before and after treatments, and the spa boutique sells oils, scrubs and herbal teas.
Sports & leisure
There is plenty to do both at the resort and further afield:
- water sports off the beach — single and double kayaks, glass-bottom kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and a floating water hammock
- two floodlit tennis courts, a pickleball court, and bicycles for adults and children to explore the grounds
- a 24-hour fitness centre with cardio and weight machines and free weights; outdoor morning yoga and Pilates several times a week
- snorkelling and diving, including Champagne Reef, where volcanic bubbles rise from the seabed
- boat trips to watch sperm whales and dolphins
- hikes of every level: to the Boiling Lake in Morne Trois Pitons National Park, to Trafalgar Falls, through Titou Gorge, part of which is swum, and along the Cabrits National Park trails to an old fort
- the hot springs at Wotten Waven, a boat trip up the Indian River near Portsmouth, and birdwatching, wild parrots in the mountain forests included
Live music plays at Kwéyòl Restaurant two evenings a week.
For children
The resort’s kids’ club welcomes children aged 4–12 from Tuesday to Sunday, from midday into the evening. It has a covered sand play area, indoor and outdoor play spaces, a playground, bicycles, a games room, a crafts table and a nap room, all looked after by qualified staff.
Restaurants & bars
The resort’s restaurants and bars pair Creole cooking — the island’s own boldly seasoned home cuisine — with international menus:
- Cabrits Market — breakfast buffet with fresh pastries and live cooking stations using local produce; a buffet lunch is served on Sundays
- Kwéyòl Restaurant — an open-air terrace by the main pool with sunset views: contemporary Creole dishes built on the local fishermen’s catch and vegetables from the resort’s organic garden, with cocktails made from local rums and tropical fruit; lunch and dinner
- Saltwood Bistro — a bistro by the second pool serving sandwiches, tartines, steaks and desserts, with drinks brought to the pool from the morning
- Rumfire Bar — an evening bar around an open fire pit: cocktails made with local rums and fresh garden herbs, and tapas
- Swim-Up Bar — drinks and snacks in the pool during the day
In-room dining runs around the clock.
Swimming
The resort has direct access to the beach on Douglas Bay, with loungers for guests. There are four outdoor pools, each with its own mood, from quiet corners to a family pool, plus a swim-up bar, a whirlpool, cabanas, umbrellas, towel service and poolside service.
Pets
One pet weighing up to 10 lb (about 4.5 kg) is welcome per room; a damage deposit is taken. There is a pet walking area on site.
