About this hotel
General information
Fogo Island Inn rises from the rocky shore of Fogo Island, off the north-east coast of Newfoundland, facing straight out onto the North Atlantic. Newfoundland-born, Norway-based architect Todd Saunders gave it an X-shaped plan: a two-storey wing holds the shared spaces, while a four-storey wing of guest rooms runs parallel to the coast on stilts, echoing the fishing stages along the island’s shoreline. It was built over eight years of collaboration between architects, designers and island makers, and almost all of its furniture and textiles were made on Fogo Island.
All 29 rooms and suites look out to sea. The inn belongs to Relais & Châteaux and is run as a social business under Shorefast, a Canadian charity, with every operating surplus reinvested in the island community. Stays are full board: all meals and non-alcoholic drinks, most land-based excursions with local guides and an island orientation with a Community Host are included. The inn operates seasonally, with a three-night minimum stay.
Location
Fogo Island lies off the north-east coast of Newfoundland, in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, on the route icebergs take as they drift south from Greenland in spring; the inn sits close to the fishing community of Joe Batt’s Arm. The nearest airport is Gander (YQX), served from Toronto, Montreal, Halifax and St. John’s. From there it is an hour to an hour and a half by road to the Farewell ferry terminal, then a crossing of about 45 minutes. The inn arranges a chauffeured transfer from Gander and coordinates the ferry, and the island has an airstrip for charter planes and helicopters.
Spa
Wellness here takes place on the fourth-floor rooftop deck: two wood-fired saunas designed by Norway-based architects Sami Rintala and Dagur Eggertsson, one facing the sea and the other the rocky landscape, alongside two open-air hot tubs overlooking the North Atlantic. The saunas are reserved through the front desk, and the programme also includes a Sauna Experience, cold plunges and guided yoga.
Sports & leisure
A yoga and fitness room with panoramic windows occupies the second floor. Most activities are included in the stay and led by Fogo Islanders, with hiking gear and weatherproof outerwear provided:
- guided hikes, including off-trail routes, planned around each guest
- sea kayaking, punt rowing and an introduction to traditional boat building
- wildlife, birdwatching and whale-watching excursions, bushcraft, berry picking and foraging
- fat bikes, e-bikes and regular bicycles, plus an on-island shuttle
- Island Orientation with a Community Host, visits to Fogo Island Workshops and the island’s museums, film screenings, music and storytelling, stargazing
- at extra cost: boat trips, cod fishing, helicopter flights, pottery and art workshops
For children
Children aged 8 and over are welcome. Three family suites sleep four to five, and the team helps shape a programme for younger guests ahead of arrival.
Restaurants & bars
Every meal is included. Menus follow the seasons and draw on what can be fished, farmed, hunted or foraged as close by as possible, from handlined cod, snow crab and lobster landed by local fishers to wild berries, mushrooms and Newfoundland root vegetables. The kitchen reinterprets island foodways through curing, fermentation and pickling, and guests may also eat at any restaurant on the island at no charge.
- Dining Room — the main restaurant with ocean views, serving breakfast, lunch and supper daily
- Bars & Lounges — from morning espresso to cocktails made with local ingredients and wines chosen by the sommelier
- Tea Room — tea and baked treats through the day
- The Shed — traditional island suppers around a communal table
- In-Between Menu — round-the-clock dining and room service, with a Daybreak basket of baked goods in the morning and packed lunches for hikes
Swimming
In summer guests swim in the island’s ponds, and cold plunges are offered throughout the season, followed by a soak in the rooftop hot tubs. Guided beach walks explore the shoreline.
Pets
Pets are not accepted; service animals with proper documentation are the exception.
