General information
Time + Tide Chinzombo is a small safari camp on the bank of the Luangwa River, facing one of the most wildlife-rich stretches of South Luangwa National Park. It takes its name from a tree that grows nearby, and it is built from natural materials — canvas, timber and reed — finished with leather, raw linen and vintage pieces, so that a contemporary feel sits easily within the tradition of the classic bush camp.
There are only six tents, set along the bank beneath old msikizi trees, each with its own pool and a view over the river, where hippos call through the night. Beside the main lodge, a riverfront sun deck holds an open-air library. The camp is open all year. Meals, soft drinks, house wine, beer and spirits, laundry, transfers from the local airport and two guided activities a day are included, along with a 20-minute welcome massage.
Location
The camp stands on the bank of the Luangwa River directly opposite South Luangwa National Park, and guests cross the river by boat to reach the park. South Luangwa is about an hour’s flight from Lusaka; from Mfuwe Airport the drive to camp takes around an hour and doubles as a first game drive, and transfers to and from the local airport are included.
Spa
Treatments are given in the privacy of the guest’s own tent or on its shaded verandah. Therapists work with African botanicals, and every session opens with the house foot ritual, a warm herbal soak. Guided yoga classes can be arranged in camp. A 20-minute welcome massage is included in the stay; further treatments are charged separately.
Sports & leisure
Two guided activities a day are included — game drives, walks, cultural excursions and, in season, boat cruises. In all, the camp offers:
- morning and afternoon game drives in the national park across the river, where lion and leopard sightings are frequent;
- walking safaris with an experienced guide;
- boat cruises in the flood season, from January to April, when the Luangwa rises and opens up flooded woodland and channels that cannot be reached the rest of the year;
- cultural excursions in the surrounding area;
- sundowner drinks out in the bush;
- a sleepout under the stars from May to October: a private camp with tents, bedrolls and a fire in a dry riverbed deep in the park, a three-course dinner cooked by a chef and breakfast over the fire (for guests aged 12 and over);
- guided yoga classes.
For children
Younger guests have activities of their own, run by the camp team: children learn to follow animal tracks with the guides, cook alongside the chefs and join other hands-on activities built around the bush. The programme runs all year.
Restaurants & bars
The main lodge, reached along a winding path, brings together the dining areas, a lounge and the bar, its shelves lined with old books and photographs. Much of the produce comes from the camp’s own garden, dinner is often served under the open sky, and a fire pit sits high above the water at the edge of the bank. Meals, soft drinks, house wine, beer and spirits are included; reserve wines, champagne and premium spirits are extra.
Swimming
Every tent has its own private pool on the verandah, looking out over the Luangwa River.
Rooms
Six tents — five one-bedroom Luxury Safari Tents and one two-bedroom family tent — all facing the river, each with its own pool.
