About this hotel
General information
Anantara's tented camp sits above the Kafue River between two islands, deep inside Kafue National Park — Zambia's oldest and largest protected area and part of the Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area. Its thirteen private units — nine pool villas, three Horizon Terrace Suites up in the canopy and one large villa over the water — are tucked into the riverine bush and open onto the wild through broad decks. The camp was designed with a light footprint and close ties to the local community, and every unit has its own dedicated host.
Days start with yoga on a deck above the river, move on to game drives or boat safaris and end with dinner around the fire in the boma, a traditional African open-air gathering place. The park holds elephant, lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog, hippo and more than twenty antelope species, puku among them, and over 500 bird species have been recorded here. The camp welcomes guests aged 12 and over.
Location
The camp lies on the bank of the Kafue River in the central part of Kafue National Park, western Zambia. By road it is about four hours from Lusaka's international airport and about eight from Livingstone. The quicker route is a private charter flight of around an hour from Lusaka or Livingstone to the camp's own airstrip, followed by a ten-minute game drive to camp. The camp arranges transfers on advance request.
Spa
Treatments are private affairs: each villa and suite has its own treatment area, where massages unfold to rustling leaves and the sounds of the bush. The menu draws on Zambia's landscapes and traditions: the Ila Forest Rebalancing Ritual, inspired by the Ila people who have long lived around the Kafue, pairs a natural body exfoliation with a deep full-body massage, while the Anantara Kafue Sunset Ember couple's ritual begins with a foot treatment and chilled Champagne as the sun goes down.
Sports & leisure
Life at the camp revolves around the river and the park:
- morning and afternoon game drives in Land Cruisers, each around three hours — elephants among ilala palms, grazing buffalo, zebras on the Busanga Plains
- river safaris on the camp's boats into corners of the park no road reaches — sitatunga in the reeds, spotted-necked otters, Nile crocodiles on the sandbanks
- birdwatching from the private deck or out in the park, with more than 500 species recorded and the best viewing from July to November
- stargazing with a local guide in a bubble beneath the sky, reached by a staircase through rosewood and cedar trees
- a floating gym moored on the Kafue River with a yoga deck, plus mats for sessions on the guest's own deck
Restaurants & bars
The kitchen works with what the land and river provide, reworking African recipes in a contemporary way:
- Luzuba Harvestry — all-day restaurant: breakfast beneath the trees, modern takes on traditional African dishes at lunch and dinner
- Twalumba Bar & Lounge — the camp's social hub, pouring wines, whiskies, local cocktails and coffee alongside light bites
- Designer Dining — a private dinner planned with the chef, set in a lantern-lit bubble above the river or at a table among the trees
- bush dinners cooked over an open fire, riverbank picnics, boat lunches, wine pairings and round-the-clock in-room dining
Swimming
The camp has a swimming pool, and every villa has its own plunge pool on the deck, looking out over the river or the bush.
