The Havannah Vanuatu

About this hotel

General information

The Havannah is a small adults-only resort (guests aged 16 and over) on the north-west coast of Efate. It occupies Samoa Point, a white-sand peninsula on Havannah Harbour — a sheltered deep-water bay edged with reef and mangroves — and its villas sit among flame trees and tropical gardens, looking across the water to Lelepa, Moso and Nguna.

Every villa is designed for two: contemporary, mostly split-level, with a king-size bed, shaded daybeds and an outlook over the sea, the garden or the large lagoon pool, and several come with a plunge pool of their own. Days move slowly — long breakfasts and dinners at The Point, a day spa in the garden, kayaks and catamarans off the beach. Dolphins, turtles, migrating whales and dugongs grazing on the seagrass are often seen in the bay right in front of the resort, which follows a local conservation group's guidelines for watching them.

Location

The resort lies on Samoa Point on the north-west coast of Efate, on sheltered Havannah Harbour facing the islands of Lelepa and Moso. Port Vila and Port Vila's international airport are about 30 minutes away by road. The resort runs road transfers to and from the airport, with a meet-and-greet after customs, and a complimentary daily shuttle into Port Vila.

Spa

The Havannah's day spa sits in a tropical garden and is open daily from 9am to 5pm. Its menu covers massages, including treatments for couples, and body treatments using Thalgo products; booking ahead is advised.

Sports & leisure

Most of the activity centres on the waters of Havannah Harbour.

  • Non-motorised water sports for guests: kayaks for exploring the coast, catamaran sailing and snorkelling straight off the beach in front of the restaurant.
  • Diving: a PADI dive centre collects guests from the resort jetty each morning; some 17 dive sites lie within about 15 minutes by boat, with hard and soft corals, reef fish, turtles and dugongs, suited to beginners and experienced divers alike.
  • A sunset cruise on the bay.
  • A private round-island tour of Efate and day trips to a nearby island, booked through the front office, with local operators collecting guests from the jetty.
  • A small boutique selling local handicrafts — woven baskets and bags, wood carvings and shell jewellery.
Restaurants & bars

The Point, the main restaurant, sits beneath a thatched dome with 270° views over Havannah Harbour. Its menu changes daily, blending French, Vietnamese, English and local influences around local seafood, tropical fruit and vegetables, locally raised beef and seasonal, organic produce where possible. Breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner are served à la carte, with New Zealand, Australian and French wines, local and imported beers and cocktails. Private dinners can be set up on the jetty, under the flame tree above the beach, on the sand beside a bonfire or in the villa.

Swimming

The resort sits directly on a white-sand beach in the sheltered bay, with reef starting close to shore — clownfish are a common sight for snorkellers. Daybeds hang over the large split-level, infinity-edge lagoon pool, and many villas have a plunge pool of their own.

Pets

Pets are not accepted; guide dogs are the only exception.
