The Kahala Hotel & Resort

About this hotel

General information

The Kahala Hotel & Resort was opened by Conrad Hilton in 1964 on a scenic bay at Kahala, among tropical gardens and beside a broad white beach. Over six decades its guests have included Queen Elizabeth II, the Dalai Lama, American presidents, Frank Sinatra, Luciano Pavarotti and Tom Cruise, and Prince Charles and Princess Diana once took a hundred rooms for a reception. The hotel still holds to a classic, understated respectability and faultless service.

The grounds have a pool and a children’s pool, a dolphin lagoon, water-sports rentals, a spa and fitness centre, restaurants, bars and a café. Events are served by more than 2,200 m² of space, including the Maile Ballroom and the oceanfront Koko Head Ocean Lawn; weddings and honeymoon programmes are arranged in-house, and a free shuttle runs to Waikiki.

Location

The resort lies on the south coast of Oahu, about 10 minutes by car from Waikiki and some 21 km, or 30–40 minutes, from Honolulu International Airport.

Spa

The Kahala Spa has eight generous treatment suites, each with its own relaxation area, glass-enclosed shower, deep soaking tub and wardrobe. Treatments blend Hawaiian tradition with Asian and European practice and local natural ingredients, and the signature rituals open with a foot bath of Hawaiian sea salts. Nail care and IV therapy programmes are also offered. The CHI Health Energy fitness centre is open around the clock, with a steam room, hot tub, group classes and personal trainers.

Sports & leisure

A heated oval pool with hot tub and poolside cabanas sits beside a natural lagoon home to bottlenose dolphins, which guests can feed, play and swim with through Dolphin Quest. The beach kiosk hires out snorkel gear, bodyboards, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards; bicycles are complimentary and beach yoga runs daily. Weekly Hawaiian culture classes cover lei making and lauhala weaving, guests enjoy perks at nearby Oahu golf courses, and partner Blue Hawaiian Activities arranges helicopter flights, snorkelling, Pearl Harbor and circle-island tours, lūʻau and sunset cruises.

For children

Children have their own pool with toys, Dolphin Quest encounters, Hawaiian culture classes and children’s art workshops, and cots are provided in the rooms. Childcare is available through the resort’s partner Aloha Sitters.

Restaurants & bars

The restaurants and bars range from Hawaii regional cooking to Italian and beachside dining.

  • Alan Wong’s — Hawaii regional cuisine drawing on the island’s many culinary traditions and local produce
  • Plumeria Beach House — all-day beachfront restaurant with indoor and outdoor terraces and a Sunday brunch
  • Arancino at The Kahala — classic and contemporary Italian cooking
  • The Veranda — cocktail lounge beneath the famous chandelier, with evening appetisers and live music on Fridays and Saturdays
  • Seaside Grill — poolside bar for cocktails and casual bites
  • Kaffe Kahala — café serving Illy coffee, pastries and sandwiches

In-room dining is available.
