Four Seasons Resort Hualalai

About this hotel

General information

Opened in 1996, Four Seasons Resort Hualalai covers 350 hectares of the Kona-Kohala Coast on Hawaiʻi Island, along an 800-metre beach on the Pacific. Low-rise bungalows in a mid-20th-century Hawaiian style, all natural wood and a quiet palette, are set among lava formations and gardens to catch as many ocean views as possible; rooms, suites and stand-alone villas face the ocean, the gardens or the 18-hole golf course.

Resort life revolves around eight pools, among them the King’s Pond swimmable aquarium, a tennis club, a water-sports centre, Hualalai Spa and the Ka‘upulehu cultural centre, which introduces guests to Hawaiian history and tradition; a collection of local art spanning 1775 to the present hangs throughout. Children have a club of their own, while events are served by 2,172 m² of indoor space, including a 574 m² ballroom, and generous outdoor lawns. Weddings and honeymoon packages are also offered.

Location

The resort is on the west side of Hawaiʻi Island, on the Kona-Kohala Coast, 11 km (about 10 minutes) from Kona International Airport and 24 km (15 minutes) from central Kailua-Kona.

Spa

Hualalai Spa moves between indoors and out: 19 treatment rooms, 18 of them in the open air — including thatched hales with soaking tubs and outdoor showers — a glass-walled steam room and the Waiea Garden, whose stream is lined with stones gathered across the island. Signatures include the Polynesian Niu coconut scrub, the Iliahi sandalwood body treatment and Hawaiian lomilomi massage, and there is a hair and nail salon.

Sports & leisure

The grounds hold eight pools:

  • King’s Pond — a 6.8-million-litre swimmable aquarium set in lava rock, home to some 4,000 tropical fish and a spotted eagle ray, with marine biologists on hand at the Kumu Kai Marine Center
  • King’s Pond Infinity Pool — an infinity pool around King’s Pond with three hot tubs
  • Seashell — a family infinity pool with thatched palapas and oversized daybeds
  • Keiki — a sand-bottomed children’s wading pool
  • Ocean Pool — ocean swimming sheltered by a natural lava breakwater
  • Beach Tree — a quiet pool framed by a wooden deck, steps from the ocean
  • Palm Grove — an adults-only infinity pool with a swim-up bar
  • Lap Pool — an Olympic-style pool with four lanes at the spa and fitness centre

The 1,393 m² fitness centre, designed with trainer Harley Pasternak, has three open-air gyms, a half basketball court and dedicated yoga and Pilates studios, with yoga, cycling, HIIT and water classes, sunrise meditation and hikes across the volcanic landscape. The 18-hole, par-72 Hualalai golf course is a Jack Nicklaus design, and the Golf Hale adds TrackMan simulators and swing and putting labs. There are seven tennis courts and three pickleball courts, while the Alaka'i Nalu ocean ambassadors teach water sports and take guests out on the resort’s own 14-metre catamaran. Further afield: helicopter tours, deep-sea fishing, horse riding, Mauna Kea summit trips and Volcanoes National Park.

For children

The complimentary Kids For All Seasons club for 5–12-year-olds runs year-round in its own space, with Hawaiian crafts, ocean explorations and theme nights. Young guests can also join the Kumu Kai Marine Center’s activities, toddlers have the sand-bottomed Keiki pool, and in summer Camp Manitou takes teens, tweens and families on island expeditions, from stargazing on Mauna Kea to swimming with manta rays.

Restaurants & bars

The resort’s five restaurants lean on local produce and ocean views, with private dining and in-room dining also available.

  • ʻULU — Pan-Asian, Hawaiian-inspired cooking between the Ocean Pool and King’s Pond, with local or Japan-flown fish, crudo and sashimi
  • NOIO — a sushi lounge upstairs from ʻULU, with an omakase counter and a seven-course tasting
  • Beach Tree — Californian cooking with an Italian accent, on the sand or in the open-air dining room, with its own bar and lounge
  • Miller & Lux Hualalai — Chef Tyler Florence’s American steakhouse overlooking the 18th green: prime steaks, a raw bar and seafood
  • Residents' Beach House — casual lanai dining beyond Waiakauhi Pond, with simply prepared seafood and sunset views
Swimming

The resort sits on its own private beach, and a natural ocean pool sheltered from the surf by lava rock is another place to swim.
