About this hotel
General information
Fairmont Orchid opened in 1990 on the Kohala Coast of Hawaiʻi Island, in an area called Mauna Lani — Hawaiian for “mountains reaching to heaven”. Coconut groves, lush gardens and the Pacific set the scene, with the island’s wider landscape of snow-capped peaks, volcanoes, tropical forest and rich underwater life within reach.
Rooms, lobbies and restaurants draw on Hawaiian tradition, and the open-air Spa Without Walls is set among orchids, ponds and waterfalls. The resort covers 13 hectares of coastline, with its own snorkelling bay, four restaurants and two bars, a 930 m² pool and tennis courts, while the 45 holes of Mauna Lani Golf lie next door. Events have a choice of ballrooms, the largest of which, the Grande Ballroom, holds up to 1,500 guests, alongside a business centre, boutiques and wedding programmes.
Location
The resort lies within the Mauna Lani resort area on the Kohala Coast of Hawaiʻi Island (the Big Island), 36 km — about half an hour by car — from Kona International Airport and 116 km from Hilo.
Spa
Spa Without Walls is almost entirely open-air: eight thatched hale huts sit among orchids, lily ponds and streams, six private cabanas face the ocean, and three treatment rooms are indoors. Treatments follow Hawaiian tradition — lomilomi massage, a māmaki volcanic mud wrap — and use island ingredients such as passion fruit, coconut oil, Kona coffee, matcha, Hawaiian sea salt and lava stones. A 158 m² fitness centre, open around the clock, is joined by seaside yoga, Pilates, aqua aerobics in the pool and in Pauoa Bay, and sound-bath sessions.
Sports & leisure
Facilities include a 930 m² oceanfront pool with private cabanas, tennis courts and Mauna Lani Golf, with its two 18-hole courses (North and South) and the family-friendly nine-hole Wikiwiki. The Hui Holokai beach ambassadors lead snorkelling in Pauoa Bay and Makaiwa Bay, sunrise canoe paddles, outrigger tours, stand-up paddleboarding, surf sessions and traditional Hawaiian fishing, with kayaks, boards and snorkel gear available at the Beach Shack. The cultural programme covers hula, lei making, basic Hawaiian, storytelling and walks to ancient fishponds and petroglyphs.
For children
There is no kids’ club, but the resort is set up for families, with spacious family suites, keiki menus in the restaurants, the large pool, snorkelling in the bay and cultural classes such as lei making that children readily join.
Restaurants & bars
The resort’s four restaurants and two bars take their cue from Hawaiian culture and the views; the dress code is resort casual.
- Brown's Beach House — the AAA Four Diamond signature restaurant steps from the shore, with modern Hawaiʻi Island cooking built on simple local produce
- Hale Kai — a poolside restaurant for lunch, sunset and dinner
- Binchotan Bar & Grill — Asia-Pacific flavours rooted in Hawaiʻi: sushi rolls, grilled mains, wine, sake and signature cocktails
- Orchid Court — breakfast buffet with made-to-order omelettes, Hawaiian dishes and fresh pastries
- Kahakai Bar — a thatched Polynesian beach bar serving tropical cocktails and pupu with views of Mauna Kea and the Pacific
- Luana Lounge — a lobby lounge for Asian-inspired bar bites and island cocktails
- Hawaiʻiloa Lūʻau — a traditional Hawaiian feast with hula and fire-knife dancing
Private dinners are held at three outdoor settings: the Knoll, The Pointe above Pauoa Bay and Milo Garden.
Swimming
The resort has its own sheltered bay, Pauoa, with a lagoon for snorkelling where green sea turtles are often seen; beach equipment is available from the Beach Shack.
Pets
Well-behaved dogs are welcome; they may not be left unattended, are not allowed in the restaurants or at the pool, and must be on a leash in public areas.
