1 Hotel Hanalei Bay

About this hotel

General information

1 Hotel Hanalei Bay sits on the north shore of Kauai, framed by dense tropical greenery and set above the golden sand of Hanalei Bay, with sheer cliffs rising around the water. Its contemporary architecture takes its cue from Hawaiian tradition, with island materials and handmade pieces throughout, and service that pairs an international standard with the island’s own hospitality.

There are 252 rooms looking out over the mountains, gardens or ocean, the 1 Kitchen restaurant supplied by local farmers and fishermen, several bars, three pools, a Bamford Wellness Spa and a kids’ club. Days revolve around the island’s landscape and culture, from surfing and kayaking to guided hikes. Seven function rooms and four open-air terraces host private events, and the hotel arranges weddings and honeymoon programmes.

Location

The hotel lies on the north coast of Kauai, directly on the beach at Hanalei Bay, 6.5 km from Princeville Airport and 46 km from Lihue Airport.

Spa

Bamford Wellness Spa, on the ninth floor, was created with Carole Bamford, founder of the British Bamford brand. Rituals pair Bamford’s botanical products with island ingredients — warm stones, Hawaiian ʻalaea salt, Kauaʻi Farmacy tropical honey and nourishing oils — alongside organic facials and treatments built on native Hawaiian plants. A suite of touchless therapies covers an ocean float room, hyperbaric oxygen, a Somadome meditation pod, steam, herbal wet and infrared saunas, ice baths and a cryo chamber, while Vitality Kauaʻi adds functional medicine with DEXA scans and IV infusions.

Sports & leisure

Anatomy Fitness, a 24-hour indoor–outdoor gym of around 930 m², has cardio and strength equipment, boxing, personal training and classes from yoga and Pilates to HIIT and beachside sessions. Three heated pools come with three hot tubs: an infinity pool for guests aged 21 and over with cabanas on the eighth floor, a main pool steps from the sand and a lagoon pool among natural rock outcrops for families. The hotel runs 26-foot double-hulled outrigger canoe tours, kayaking and paddleboarding on the Hanalei River, surf and snorkel sessions and guided hikes, and the concierge arranges helicopter flights and boat trips along the Nāpali Coast. There are three hard tennis courts, pickleball, an 18-hole disc-golf course and complimentary bikes, and the Princeville Makai golf course is about 1.5 km away.

For children

The Seedlings kids’ club, on the first floor, runs Aloha Camp for 5–12-year-olds: local sea life, art made from marine debris, Hawaiian moʻolelo stories and active play with the Little Anatomy coaches. Younger children can join Aloha Hour with a parent, The Sandbox has a children’s menu, and the lagoon pool suits the whole family.

Restaurants & bars

The hotel’s six venues cook with seasonal produce from local farmers and fishermen, and all are certified Ocean Friendly Restaurants by Surfrider Kauaʻi.

  • 1 Kitchen — the eighth-floor restaurant: seasonal island cooking, wood-grilled local fish and farm vegetables, with its own bar
  • Welina Terrace — a ninth-floor lounge over Hanalei Bay and Mount Makana: Japanese-inspired small plates, cocktails, Hawaiian rums, Japanese whiskies, agave spirits, low-intervention wines and live music nightly
  • The Sandbox — a relaxed, ocean-facing poolside restaurant: poke bowls, fish tacos, wood-fired pizza, agave cocktails and a children’s menu
  • Neighbors Café — café and market with Hanalei Coffee Roasters coffee, cold-pressed juices and house-made pastries
  • Waiʻoli — a poolside stand for soft-serve, gelato and Hawaiian shave ice, spiked with rum if wished
  • Sunrise Nourishment Bar — morning juices, elixirs and broths at the 1 Kitchen bar

A lobby farmstand sets out fresh fruit daily, and in-room dining runs from morning to night.

Swimming

The hotel sits right on Honoʻiki Beach on Hanalei Bay, good for swimming, snorkelling, paddleboarding and exploring tide pools. Beach chairs can be reserved, the beach hale on the first floor rents snorkels, boards and kayaks, and the pools have cabanas and daybeds.

Pets

Up to two dogs stay free of charge, with a welcome amenity, beds, bowls and food on hand and a concierge who knows the island’s dog parks. Dogs must be leashed in public areas, are not allowed in the restaurants or the gym and may not be left unattended; Hawaiʻi’s animal quarantine rules apply. Through Kauaʻi Humane Society, guests can also take a shelter dog on a field trip or for a sleepover.

Rooms

The 252 rooms, 51 of them suites, are designed in a contemporary Hawaiian style with local natural materials and handcrafted décor. Floor-to-ceiling windows and terraces look out to the mountains, tropical gardens, Hanalei Bay and the Pacific Ocean.
