About this hotel
General information
Sonnenalp Hotel stands in the heart of Vail Village and was founded in 1979 by a family from Bavaria. It has kept to high standards of service and a warm, family-house hospitality ever since, and its rooms combine alpine interiors of natural wood and custom-made furniture with modern comfort.
Guests have a pool with indoor and outdoor sections, a spa, four restaurants, a bar with live music and the hotel’s own golf club, the Sonnenalp Club in Edwards. More than 460 m² of function space hosts meetings and celebrations of up to 200 guests, and weddings are arranged here too.
Location
The hotel is in the centre of Vail Village, above Gore Creek. Vail/Eagle County Regional Airport is about 56 km away and Denver International Airport 195 km.
Spa
Sonnenalp Spa brings together heated indoor and outdoor pools with a riverside sun deck, indoor and outdoor whirlpools overlooking Gore Creek, steam rooms, saunas, an oxygen bar, a spa café and a modern fitness centre. The menu runs to European-style restorative massage, dry brush massage and Hydrafacials; steam rooms, saunas and the gym are for guests aged 18 and over.
Sports & leisure
Winter means downhill and cross-country skiing and snowboarding; the rest of the year brings climbing, mountain biking, hiking, riding, tennis, fishing, white-water rafting and hot-air ballooning. The Sonnenalp Club, with an 18-hole links-style championship course, lies in Edwards, about 26 km from Vail Village, and hotel guests get preferred tee times. Ski equipment can be hired at the hotel’s ski lounge.
For children
The Sonnenalp Kids Club takes children aged 5–12 in the evenings for arts and crafts, games, music, and dinner and movie nights. Private sessions with a sitter can be booked at other times.
Restaurants & bars
Restaurants and bars are spread across the hotel, Vail Village and the golf club; in summer there is a pool menu, and in-room dining is available too.
- Ludwig’s — breakfast from the menu and a buffet, then Ludwig’s Elevated Dining for refined European cooking in the evening
- Swiss Chalet — a snug, wood-panelled room with a mountain-cabin feel for alpine dishes and fondue
- Bully Ranch — relaxed Colorado-inspired lunch and dinner, with happy hour indoors and on the terrace
- King’s Club — a fireside bar for cocktails and live music
- Treff Café — a European-style café for breakfast and drinks
- Harvest Restaurant & Bar — family-friendly new American cooking with mountain views at the Sonnenalp Club
Swimming
The indoor–outdoor pool is heated all year, with a sun deck above the river and outdoor whirlpools looking over Gore Creek. Children under 16 swim only with an adult.
Skiing
The hotel’s ski concierge is based at Gorsuch Ski Café, a few steps from Gondola One: a private lounge with boot fitting, storage with boot warmers, K2, Head and Rossignol skis and snowboards to hire, on-site tuning and waxing, and a café serving drinks and bites.
Pets
Pets are not accepted; only service dogs are allowed.
