About this hotel
General information
Four Seasons Resort The Biltmore Santa Barbara spreads across nearly nine hectares of palm-shaded, flower-filled gardens a few steps from the ocean in exclusive Montecito, between the Santa Ynez Mountains and the Pacific. Built in 1927, it keeps its classic Spanish Colonial architecture: red-tiled roofs and towers, white façades with arches and balconies, sheltered terraces and broad walks beneath mature trees.
Within that setting sit refined rooms and bungalows, a spa designed by Peter Marino, a pool set in tropical planting, tennis and pickleball courts, thoughtful provision for families, the ocean-view Bella Vista restaurant and Ty Lounge with its fireplace. Meeting and banqueting rooms total 1,390 m² and hold 10–400 guests, and weddings are arranged on site. The Biltmore is one of the best-known addresses on what is often called the American Riviera.
Location
The resort lies on the Pacific coast of California, south-east of central Santa Barbara in Montecito, a few minutes’ walk from Butterfly Beach. Santa Barbara Airport is 19 km (20 minutes) away and Los Angeles International Airport 150 km (around 1.5 hours).
Spa
The spa, designed by New York architect Peter Marino, sits between the award-winning rose garden and the Jungle Pool. It has 11 treatment rooms, among them ocean-view suites, saunas and steam rooms in the changing areas and an upper-level relaxation lounge, with face and body treatments inspired by the resort’s seaside gardens. The José Eber Santa Barbara salon covers hair and beauty.
Sports & leisure
The grounds hold two hard tennis courts and two pickleball courts, with pros, lessons and equipment, plus croquet, a putting green and bicycle hire; the fitness centre looks out over the palms and runs group yoga and Pilates classes. Guests enjoy privileges at the Sandpiper, Rancho San Marcos and Montecito Club golf courses, and the concierge arranges paddleboarding, guided botanical tours of the gardens, sailing and sunset cocktail cruises, jeep tours and wine tours in the Santa Ynez Valley; a shuttle runs to downtown Santa Barbara.
For children
The resort is well set up for families: young guests receive a welcome amenity, cribs can be added to rooms, music plays underwater in the pool, and the concierge plans outings to suit children’s ages and interests.
Restaurants & bars
The resort’s restaurant and lounge both look out to the ocean.
- Bella Vista — organic, Italian-inspired Californian coastal cooking with panoramic ocean and island views over Butterfly Beach
- Ty Lounge — a dim Spanish Colonial lounge of Italian onyx and hand-blown glass chandeliers, for tapas, classic cocktails and local wines by the fire or on the ocean-view terrace
- Chef’s Garden — private dinners beneath the Cape chestnut tree in executive chef Michael Patria’s garden, with six menus built on its produce
- 24-hour in-room dining
Swimming
The heated, hand-tiled Jungle Pool is tucked among kentia palms and Australian tree ferns, with music playing underwater, two whirlpools beside it and refreshments brought round every hour. Butterfly Beach is a few minutes’ walk away.
Pets
Well-trained pets up to 23 kg, no more than two per room, are welcome in Bungalow Rooms and Bungalow Suites. They must be kept on a leash around the grounds and never left alone; only service animals are allowed in the restaurants, spa and pool areas, and the concierge can arrange a pet sitter.
Rooms
The 207 rooms are mostly set in two-storey main buildings, with the rest in 12 free-standing classic California bungalows of two to four rooms or suites each. Every one differs in size and layout, furnished with historic and handcrafted pieces, colourful mosaics, hand-knotted rugs and hand-painted Andalusian Talavera tiles in the bathrooms.
