About this hotel
General information
Lovango Resort + Beach Club sits on Lovango Cay, a small green island between St. Thomas and St. John in the US Virgin Islands. Rather than a main building, the resort is a scatter of hand-built treehouses, glamping tents and villas set into the hillside, their decks and outdoor showers facing the sea and the neighbouring islands. There are no private cars on the cay; guests get around in the resort’s open safari-style vehicles.
Island life revolves around the Beach Club and its infinity pool, a restaurant at the water's edge and a handful of small shops. Guests snorkel straight off the shore, walk the trails up to the summit and over to the north shore, and take the resort's boat across to a national park beach on St. John. The island makes its own fresh water and draws most of its power from solar panels.
Location
Lovango Cay lies in the channel between St. Thomas and St. John, around 10 minutes by boat from either. The resort's own ferry runs to a timetable from Cruz Bay on St. John (about 10 minutes) and from Red Hook on St. Thomas (15–30 minutes); crossings are arranged in advance through the concierge, and luggage is delivered straight to the room. The nearest airport is St. Thomas airport, from where the concierge books a car to the resort's dock in Red Hook, or a private water taxi for late arrivals or a quicker journey. From the British Virgin Islands, guests come by public ferry via St. Thomas or St. John, or by water taxi.
Spa
There is no spa on the island; instead, the concierge books massages with therapists who come to the guest's own villa, treehouse or tent.
Sports & leisure
Most of what there is to do involves the sea and the island's trails:
- snorkelling straight from the shore with the resort's gear, plus guided snorkels on set days out to the coral nursery off the beach
- walking trails to the summit and the north shore, with views across the US and British Virgin Islands, guided on set days
- Gym in the Jungle, an open-air training area under the trees on the north side, kitted out with timber dumbbells, barbells and lifting racks
- giant chess and other lawn games at the Beach Club
- boat runs on set days to Honeymoon Beach in Virgin Islands National Park (about 10 minutes) for a swim, sometimes with turtles or dolphins nearby, and the national park trails on St. John
- half- or full-day charter boats from the resort dock around the US Virgin Islands or over to the British Virgin Islands, including Maho Bay, where sea turtles are often seen
- watching for whales, dolphins and pelicans from the shore
Restaurants & bars
The cooking is contemporary coastal Caribbean. Vegetarian, vegan and other dietary needs are catered for, meals can be delivered to the room, and the concierge can arrange a private chef.
- Waterfront Restaurant — refined dinners of contemporary coastal Caribbean food by the water, facing the sunset
- The Sandpit — relaxed daily lunches by the water, island-style dishes and homemade ice-cream sandwiches; on some evenings, simple dinners on the sand around fire pits with live music
- Chef's Taste of the Caribbean — a Caribbean buffet dinner served outdoors
- Beach Club — food and drinks brought to every lounger, then sundowners and dinner by the water
- Treetops Tent and Lounge — a breakfast buffet each morning at the top of the island
Swimming
The Beach Club is the main place to swim, with a 21-metre infinity pool, loungers, umbrellas, shaded cabanas and towels, and food and drink served to every seat. The current there is stronger and there is no walk-in beach, so a staircase leads into the water by the snorkelling area. For swimming from the sand, the secluded Crescent Beach on the north side is about 20 minutes away along a hilly trail and has daybeds kept for resort guests; on set days the resort's boat also runs to Honeymoon Beach on St. John.
Rooms
Treehouses, glamping tents and villas with one to three bedrooms are spread across the hillside, and every one looks out to sea. The villas and treehouses are air-conditioned, while the tents rely on an Evening Breeze cooling system over the bed and the sea breeze elsewhere; most can take free pull-out beds for children.
Treehouses, tents and villas come with a minibar with fridge, sink and Nespresso machine, bathrobes, a hairdryer, an iron and board, high-speed internet and housekeeping, and most also have an outdoor shower with a sea view.
