Ariana Sustainable Luxury Lodge

About this hotel

General information

Ariana Sustainable Luxury Lodge is a small eco-lodge on a hillside above the Uçhisar valley in Cappadocia. Its name refers to an ancient sun goddess, and each of its eleven suites, spread over three levels, takes the name of a goddess of Anatolia or Mesopotamia. Some suites are carved into the soft volcanic rock, others are built of stone, and two are split-level lofts.

The interiors are full of light: vaulted ceilings, natural stone and old mosaics sit alongside contemporary furniture, commissioned photography and artworks. The lobby has a leather sofa and a wood-burning stove, and the gardens step down the slope to the lodge’s own vineyard. The hotel works to sustainable-tourism principles and shapes its days around local food, wine and an unhurried exploration of the region.

Location

The lodge stands in the Tekelli quarter of Uçhisar, on a slope looking across the valleys of Cappadocia, with views towards Pigeon Valley. Nevşehir Kapadokya Airport is 39 km away (about 40 minutes) and Kayseri Airport 75 km (about 75 minutes); private transfers are arranged by the hotel on request.

Spa

There is no spa as such; instead, massages are given outdoors on the sun terraces overlooking the valley. The Aruru suite has its own Turkish hammam with a wooden lounging area, and in season an hour in a heated private hot tub by the vineyard, with a bottle of sparkling wine or champagne, can be booked.

Sports & leisure

The lodge has a gym, and its terraces lend themselves to yoga. The rest of the day is filled with outings arranged by the concierge:

  • a sunrise hot-air balloon flight with private transfer;
  • half-day or full-day tours of Cappadocia’s landmarks, 4x4 off-road drives and a sunset safari in a Land Rover Defender with a tasting of local wines;
  • a photography tour with a professional photographer, horse riding and guided hikes under the full moon;
  • mountain bike hire with a map of suggested routes;
  • a drive along the Silk Road to the Salt Lake (Tuz Gölü) by way of an old caravanserai, and the Semah ceremony of the whirling dervishes;
  • sommelier-led wine tastings and a private cooking class in local dishes such as manti, testi kebab and sarma.
Restaurants & bars

The single restaurant, The Plum Restaurant, serves breakfast, lunch and dinner: contemporary Mediterranean cooking with Turkish touches, built on seasonal produce from local farms and the lodge’s own garden and vineyard. The dining room has floor-to-ceiling windows and the sun terraces face the valley, with Cappadocian wines to match. There is also a bar and 24-hour room service, as well as vineyard picnics and a six-course tasting dinner served among the vines.
