About this hotel
General information
Four Seasons Tented Camp Golden Triangle opened in early 2006 where the borders of Thailand, Myanmar and Laos meet. On a green hillside above the winding Ruak River stand just 15 freestanding tented bungalows, styled after the expedition camps of the 19th century. Inside there is teak panelling, handmade furniture, beds under fine canopies, Thai artefacts and hand-beaten copper bathtubs, while terraces look over the river, the hills of Myanmar, the mountains of Laos and the jungle of the Golden Triangle.
The camp pairs modern comfort with a real sense of remoteness in the wild. Its rhythm is set by the elephants, the river and local culture: jungle walks, cookery classes and talks on the history of the north. A business centre, gift shop, laundry and dry cleaning are also available.
Location
The camp is in northern Thailand on the Ruak River, in the Golden Triangle where Thailand, Myanmar and Laos converge. Chiang Rai International Airport is 85 km away — about 1.5 hours, including a 20-minute boat ride along the Ruak — and Chiang Mai is four hours by road.
Spa
Jungle Spa is tucked into bamboo forest and garden, with a bathing and shower area and two open-air treatment pavilions. Massages and treatments blend traditional and modern Thai techniques with local natural ingredients, including mountain herbs, and the Thai Ytsara range. Treatments can also be taken in the tent.
Sports & leisure
There is an outdoor pool with a jacuzzi. Guests can walk through the jungle with elephants, visit the elephant camp and learn the mahout’s craft, take boat trips on the Mekong, go fishing and hiking, explore the Golden Triangle, and join Thai cookery and traditional craft classes or talks on northern Thai culture and history.
Restaurants & bars
The kitchen reflects the three countries of the Golden Triangle:
- Nong Yao — restaurant in a traditional Thai pavilion serving Thai, Burmese, Lao and Western dishes, with a snug bar and fireplace
- Burma Bar — veranda overlooking the river and Myanmar, with local snacks, drinks, barbecue and afternoon tea
- wine cellar — wood-panelled, with bottles from around the world and a small tasting room
- Elephant Camp — restaurant beside the elephant enclosure serving Golden Triangle cuisines, with evening performances of traditional dance
Evening cocktails are served in the bars, and in-tent dining, private barbecues and picnics can be arranged.
