Singita Sabora Tented Camp

About this hotel

General information

Singita Sabora Tented Camp is a small, permanent tented camp on the open plains of the Grumeti Reserve, where Serengeti grassland runs unbroken to the horizon. It takes the classic romance of life under canvas and gives it a contemporary reading: light structures, a pared-back palette, layered textures and carefully considered practical details, with work by local artisans throughout the camp.

With only nine suites, the camp is all about space, quiet and privacy. The main area, with its pool and lounge tent, faces the plains, and two waterholes draw game close to the suites. The reserve is part of the Serengeti–Mara ecosystem, home to lion, cheetah, leopard, elephant and buffalo, and lies on the path of the great wildebeest migration. Meals, drinks and twice-daily game drives are included. Children aged 10 and over are welcome.

Location

The camp lies in the Grumeti Reserve, more than 1,400 km² of protected land in the Serengeti’s western corridor, next to the national park. All flights land at the Sasakwa airstrip inside the reserve, where Singita staff meet guests for the drive to camp; this transfer is included. The flight from Arusha takes about an hour, from Kilimanjaro about 1 hr 15 min. Grumeti Air flies direct every day from Arusha via Kilimanjaro, and private charters can be arranged.

Spa

The camp has its own wellness space with a treatment area. Treatments are shaped around how each guest wants to feel and draw on the culture and traditions of the region; massages can also be given in the suite and, at times, outdoors. Guided yoga, private or in a group, can be booked at any time of day, in the suite, in a shared space or out in the bush, and every suite has its own meditation deck for practising alone.

Sports & leisure

Game drives head out twice a day, early in the morning and again in the evening, with a guide and tracker. The wildebeest migration usually moves through Grumeti between May and July, though the reserve is rich in wildlife all year. Other experiences include:

  • guided walking safaris across plains and grassland with a guide and tracker, away from the vehicle routes (a minimum age of 16 is suggested);
  • a sunrise hot-air balloon flight with Serengeti Balloon Safaris, about an hour over the plains;
  • bird-watching;
  • a fitness centre in the camp’s tented style, with a treadmill and bikes facing the plains and room for stretching, yoga and weights;
  • visits to neighbouring communities, where the Grumeti Fund works on education, water and local enterprise;
  • the Singita Boutique & Gallery shop.

The reserve is cared for by the non-profit Grumeti Fund, whose work has seen buffalo, wildebeest and elephant numbers recover and the critically endangered eastern black rhino returned to this land.

For children

Young guests can join the Mini Rangers course, learning to track animals, bush survival and astronomy, competing to spot game, trees and birds, and taking nature quizzes. There are also cooking sessions, board games, stargazing, arts and crafts, films, activity booklets with games and puzzles, and childminding. Children join game activities at the guide’s discretion.

Restaurants & bars

There are no separate restaurants: meals are served in the shared spaces, out in the bush or in the suite, each of which has its own stocked pantry and dining area. The camp’s signature is the Guest Deli, a collection of leather and woven baskets and fridges of gourmet treats that guests help themselves to for the suite or a picnic spot around camp. Sommeliers lead tastings in camp or in the bush at sunset, along with a four-course food and wine pairing dinner, and the wine list centres on South African bottles, including rare and limited releases. All meals and drinks, premium wines and spirits among them, are included; halal food is available when requested in advance.

Swimming

The pool sits beside the camp’s main lounge, looking out over the endless plains, where wildebeest often graze in the distance and giraffe drift past.
