About this hotel
General information
Singita Faru Faru Lodge sits on the banks of the Grumeti River, directly in front of a busy waterhole where plains animals come down to drink throughout the day. The lodge is contemporary in spirit, pairing organic materials with the easy practicality of an old-fashioned botanist’s camp: wood, stone and oversized windows that seem to draw the wilderness indoors. With only nine suites, the mood stays intimate and unhurried.
The lodge lies within Singita Grumeti, a private reserve of more than 140,000 ha (350,000 acres) on the western side of the Serengeti ecosystem. Working with the non-profit Grumeti Fund, the reserve has seen buffalo, elephant and wildebeest numbers recover, and eastern black rhino have been returned to the land. Faru Faru is open all year and welcomes children of all ages. All meals and drinks, premium wines and spirits included, twice-daily game drives in open vehicles and laundry are part of the stay.
Location
The lodge stands in the Grumeti concession, in the western corridor of the Serengeti, on the Grumeti River. All flights land at the Singita Sasakwa airstrip inside the reserve: Grumeti Air flies daily from Arusha via Kilimanjaro, with direct flight times of about one hour from Arusha and about 1 hr 15 min from Kilimanjaro, and private charters can be arranged. Singita staff meet guests at the airstrip for the road transfer to the lodge, which is included.
Spa
Wellness treatments, inspired by the culture and traditions of the region, are given in the suite or, on request, outdoors. Resident instructors lead yoga for any level, privately or in groups, in the suite, in the lodge’s shared spaces or out in the bush, and every suite has a mat and a card with a self-guided sequence.
Sports & leisure
Game drives with guides and trackers head out every morning and evening; lion, cheetah, leopard, buffalo, elephant, Maasai giraffe and bat-eared fox are regular sightings, and the great wildebeest migration usually moves through Grumeti between May and July. Other experiences include:
- guided walks with a guide and tracker, away from the vehicle routes (recommended from age 16);
- a sunrise hot-air balloon flight of about an hour over the Serengeti (children from age 7);
- birdwatching;
- South African wine tastings with sommeliers, at the lodge or out in the bush at sunset, and a four-course food and wine pairing dinner;
- visits to neighbouring communities, where the Grumeti Fund supports education, water projects and local enterprise;
- a fitness centre with modern machines, free weights and windows onto the bush, plus tennis at neighbouring Sasakwa;
- the Singita Boutique & Gallery, with work by African artists and carvings and jewellery by local craftspeople.
For children
Younger guests can join the Mini Rangers Course, which covers animal tracking, astronomy, bush survival skills, game-, tree- and bird-spotting competitions and nature quizzes. There are also cooking sessions, board games, stargazing, arts and crafts, swimming, films and activity booklets, and childminding is available. Children join game drives at the guide’s discretion.
Restaurants & bars
At the heart of the lodge is a café-style bar and deli that spills out to the pool area and firepit, where evenings unfold under the stars. Meals are served on wide outdoor decks, including one over the river, and in several airy nooks of the main building. All meals and drinks, premium wines and spirits included, are part of the stay, and halal food can be prepared when booked in advance.
Swimming
The main lodge has two pools with loungers, finished in wood and stone. They face the waterhole, so animals coming down to drink can be watched from the water at any time of day. The Two-Bedroom Suite has its own private pool.
Rooms
Nine airy suites: seven with one bedroom, one family suite and one two-bedroom suite with a private pool. Oversized windows frame the river and the bush.
Each suite has a private fitness area, a yoga mat with a routine card, a hairdryer, Wi-Fi (which can be slow given the remote setting) and 220 V power with adaptors on request.
Suite
A one-bedroom suite with double or twin beds and large windows onto the bush, for two guests.
