Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti

About this hotel

General information

Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti lies inside Serengeti National Park, out on the open plains of its central region. Thatched buildings are linked by raised wooden walkways, and in front of the main lodge and pool is a natural waterhole where elephant, buffalo, baboons and impala come to drink through the day. Infrared cameras watch the water, and guests are alerted on channel 1 of the in-room television whenever animals approach.

The 77 rooms, suites and villas are done in a contemporary African style of earth tones, wood, local textiles and art. A highlight is the Discovery Centre, part museum and part lecture theatre, built around an interactive map of the Serengeti–Mara ecosystem that traces the Great Migration of wildebeest. Three meals a day and drinks, including house wines, local beers and spirits, are included. The lodge supports rhino conservation, and most of its suppliers, like nearly everything in its two boutiques, come from Tanzania and elsewhere in Africa. Guests must be aged two or older.

Location

The lodge stands in the central Serengeti, about a 45-minute drive from Seronera airstrip. Light aircraft fly there from Arusha Airport (around 45 minutes), from Kilimanjaro International, the closest international gateway to the Serengeti, and from Dar es Salaam’s international airport (around two hours); luggage on these flights is limited to 15 kg per person in soft bags. Private charters can fly direct to Seronera at any time in daylight. The lodge’s own reservations team arranges flights and airstrip transfers.

Spa

The spa is a set of six free-standing treatment pavilions, each large enough for couples and fitted with a private steam shower and an outdoor bathtub on a terrace facing the savannah. Treatments draw on African plants and oils: the baobab-based Tree of Life Journey, Earth Energies botanical scrubs, the four-handed Ubuntu signature massage with neroli, baobab and wheatgerm oils, the deep-pressure Kifa massage with warm baobab oil, plus facials and nail care. Yoga, meditation and fitness classes are also offered.

Sports & leisure

The lodge runs its own half- and full-day game drives, the longer ones with a picnic lunch: along the Seronera River, to the Moru Kopjes and their rock paintings, south to Ndutu, into the Western Corridor when the Great Migration passes through, and a full day to the Ngorongoro Crater by way of Olduvai Gorge. Also on offer:

  • a sunrise hot-air balloon flight followed by a Champagne breakfast in the bush;
  • a 90-minute walking safari with the resident naturalist and Maasai guides, ending with a sundowner;
  • private photographic safaris with a professional wildlife photographer for groups of two to six;
  • a birding and nature trail at the lodge (the greater Serengeti counts more than 500 bird species), naturalist talks and wildlife documentaries in the Discovery Centre;
  • sunset meditation on a rocky hilltop near the lodge, bush breakfasts, picnics and an open-air bush cinema;
  • a 24-hour fitness centre with treadmills, bikes, ellipticals and strength equipment overlooking the pool and plains, and a games room.
For children

Kijana Klub (kijana is Swahili for youth) is open daily to children aged 2–17, with adult supervision for under-fours. Its space in the main building has an arts and crafts corner, foosball, board and video games, a computer, films and a small library. The complimentary Kids For All Seasons programme, run with the Discovery Centre, introduces African wildlife and culture: a morning with a Maasai guide (making fire, a toothbrush from a twig, the plants used as medicine), Tingatinga painting, Maasai beadwork, setting camera traps, a sound safari, tree planting, Swahili lessons and scavenger hunts. Every child gets a Serengeti Passport to log the animals they spot, and there are kids’ movie nights with dinner, cookie-baking classes, Mini Maasai spa treatments for under-12s and a limited babysitting service at extra cost.

Restaurants & bars

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included, and dinner can move to a different setting each night:

  • Nuru (Swahili for light) — the main restaurant, for breakfast and dinners of African-inspired dishes and classics made with local produce;
  • Maji Bar and Terrace — an all-day open-air lounge with Serengeti views, serving cocktails, light meals, pizzas and salads;
  • Boma Grill — African grilled dishes around an open fire pit in a traditional boma enclosure, with an evening of Maasai culture;
  • The Vineyard — dinner in the private wine cellar, a five-course set menu paired with South African wines (supplement applies);
  • Bush dinner — a torchlit barbecue around a bonfire out in the park;
  • On the Edge — a table for two on an island in the middle of the pool, facing the waterhole;
  • 24-hour in-room dining.
Swimming

The large free-form infinity pool, lined with sun loungers, looks straight onto the waterhole where elephants come to drink, and private dinners are set on an island in its centre. All suites and the five villas have their own pools.
