&Beyond Klein's Camp

About this hotel

General information

&Beyond Klein's Camp is a small camp in the classic safari mould, set on the edge of the Kuka Hills in a remote north-eastern corner of the Serengeti. From its slopes the view runs down a valley bordering Serengeti National Park and the Masai Mara National Reserve. The camp sits on a private 10,000-hectare concession that &Beyond leases from the Maasai who own the land, so only the camp’s own vehicles turn up at sightings.

The guest areas have a vintage feel: stone walls and floors, open fireplaces, deep leather armchairs and a well-furnished bar and sitting room. There are just ten cottages, each looked after by a private butler, and the kitchen draws on the camp’s own organic vegetable garden. Three meals a day, most drinks, safari activities and laundry are included. Children of all ages are welcome.

Location

The camp lies on a private concession on the Serengeti’s north-eastern edge, at the Kuka Hills, looking down the valley towards the Masai Mara. Several airlines fly scheduled services from Arusha to Lobo airstrip every morning, followed by an unhurried 1.5–2-hour drive to camp with game viewing along the way. Transfers between the airstrip and the camp are included.

Spa

There is no spa as such: holistic massages and Healing Earth wellness treatments are given in the privacy of the guest’s own cottage.

Sports & leisure

The camp’s great asset is its private concession, where wildlife moves freely to and from the national park and guides may drive off-road to get closer to the animals. Drives go out in search of the Big Five and the other residents of the wooded hillsides, rolling grassland and forested riverbanks. Other experiences include:

  • night drives to track nocturnal wildlife;
  • guided bush walks across the concession, away from roads and vehicles;
  • bird-watching, especially rewarding in the seasonal marshes;
  • a visit to a Maasai boma, a traditional enclosed homestead not far from camp, to learn about everyday life and customs;
  • a morning coffee stop in the bush and a sundowner on evening drives;
  • a pair of SWAROVSKI OPTIK binoculars per cottage for the length of the stay;
  • the Safari Shop, with handmade Maasai crafts from the area.

Most of the camp’s staff come from the local community; &Beyond supports schools in the area, grows its own vegetables and has done away with plastic water bottles.

For children

The &Beyond WILDchild programme is included for young guests: hands-on activities rooted in the bush and in local culture, such as tracking, beading, painting and crafts, as well as time in the vegetable garden or the kitchen. Activities are matched to each child’s age and interests and run in the care of guides, trackers and childminders, and every child receives a WILDchild backpack with a scrapbook for safari memories.

Restaurants & bars

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served in the camp’s main dining room or out on the concession, under the stars or in the open bush. The cooking makes the most of fresh produce from the camp’s organic garden, and the bar and lounge, warmed by an open fire, look out over the distant hills. Meals and drinks are included, except champagne, cognac and fine wines.

Swimming

The camp’s pool looks out across the valley to the hazy outline of distant hills.

Rooms

Ten intimate cottages built of local stone and makuti palm thatch, with rich wooden floors and classic interiors; two of them combine as the Family Cottage. The camp takes no more than 20 guests.

In each room

Each cottage has an en-suite bathroom with a shower and separate WC, a private veranda facing the valley, a personal bar, mosquito nets, a safe, a hairdryer, a telephone and Wi-Fi.
