Villa 32

About this hotel

General information

Villa 32 is an intimate hot-spring retreat in Beitou, in the green hills on the northern edge of Taipei, and a member of Relais & Châteaux. It has just five suites, two Japanese and three European, each with its own hot-spring bath. The whole place is composed of four elements — spring, wood, tree and stone: fine timber and stone usually kept for interiors are used out in the garden, where hot water steps down three tiers beside a tall wall streaming with mountain water.

The mood is closer to a private house than a hotel, with a fire in the lobby, greenery filling every window and a butler team looking after each guest. Beitou has been known for its white and green sulphur springs for a century, and the villa is built around them, with eight pools in the public baths and aromatherapists at The SPA. Guests must be aged 16 or over.

Location

The villa stands at 32 Zhongshan Road in Beitou, a hot-spring valley among the hills of northern Taipei. It is best reached by metro or car: the Tamsui–Xinyi line runs to Beitou station, then it is a 5–8 minute taxi ride, or change for Xinbeitou station and take a 3–5 minute taxi from there. There is no shuttle bus; valet parking is available for guests arriving by car.

Spa

The public baths are split into men's and women's sides, which swap every two weeks; each has four indoor and four outdoor pools, a steam room, a sauna, a zen room, a sleep room and a reading corner with CASSINA loungers. The water is white and green sulphur, the green an acidic sulphate-chloride spring of pH 1–2. Bathing is nude and phones and all electronic devices are banned; staying guests use the baths without limit from 10:00 to 23:00, and they close one Monday a month for maintenance.

The SPA opens daily from 10:00 to 22:00. The aromatherapist tailors the scent, music, light and pressure to each guest, and every treatment begins with a shower, a foot bath and tea. The massages bring together meridian and acupoint work with classic European aromatherapy:

  • Spring — Swedish massage;
  • Wood — Chinese meridian tapping and deep-tissue massage;
  • Trees — signature journeys, including the four-hour 32 Journey, Purification and Renaissance;
  • Stone — Omorovicza facial and body treatments, among them a golden moisturising and firming facial.

The spa works with Bamford and Omorovicza products, Arte Verde essential oils and Unitouch masks.

Sports & leisure

Water sets the rhythm here: the public baths with eight pools, a steam room and a sauna, and a private hot-spring bath in every suite. The garden, where hot water runs over stone steps and mountain water down a tall wall, is made for slow walks. Close by there is an 18-hole golf course, as well as routes for hiking and cycling.

Restaurants & bars

The Restaurant serves refined European cooking that pairs seasonal Taiwanese produce with continental classics, with an open window onto the kitchen. Its wood-and-stone room has the sheltered warmth of a forest, and the outdoor area looks over the garden's hot-spring cascades. It serves lunch, afternoon tea and dinner; the sommelier keeps a large cellar with many rare bottles, and three private dining rooms — Chili Room, Tomato Room and Pepper Room — are set aside for private meals.

Swimming

There is no swimming pool; bathing here is in hot-spring water, in the eight pools of the public baths and the private bath of each suite.

Pets

Pets are not allowed.
