About this hotel
General information
The Lalu occupies a peninsula on the shore of Sun Moon Lake in Nantou County, facing green mountain slopes mirrored in the water. The resort is split into three buildings: the main one holds the guest suites, the second the spa, gym, Jacuzzi and members’ club, and the third the villas, a library and meeting rooms. The architecture is restrained and minimal, and the lighting was planned alongside the buildings: through the day it shifts seven times to follow the sun, and after dark lamps set in the treetops cast the shadows of leaves onto the ground.
Its centrepiece is a 60-metre outdoor infinity pool whose surface merges with the lake and the sky. Nearby lies a mirror pool where candles in copper holders are lit at dusk, and a ten-storey stairway, modelled on the image of the Great Wall, climbs through the grounds with deep window openings onto the lake. Accommodation is suites and villas only, from 83 m² one-bedroom suites to a 333 m² villa with its own pool.
Location
The hotel sits on the shore of Sun Moon Lake in Nantou County; the bus stop at the Shuishe visitor centre is about a 15-minute walk away, and the hotel collects its guests from there free of charge on request. By car from Taipei, the route follows the national freeways to the Ailan exit, about 16 km from the hotel. A shuttle for hotel guests runs from the high-speed rail station in Taichung and must be booked at least 24 hours ahead, while the reservations team arranges cars from Taoyuan International Airport and other cities in Taiwan.
Spa
Lalu Spa looks out over the lake and the mountains. Its signature is the LALU classic massage, which pairs long, sweeping strokes with aromatic oils to release the muscles. The menu also includes a four-hand jade massage, with two therapists working in one rhythm, a treatment in which warm oil is dripped onto seven energy points of the body, foot baths, kansa wand massage, singing-bowl sound sessions and a herbal steam bath. The wellness programme adds water yoga in the infinity pool and meditation facing the lake.
Sports & leisure
Guests have the 60-metre outdoor infinity pool, a gym, a Jacuzzi and a library. The spa leads water yoga and lakeside meditation, and paths through the gardens, where azaleas and peach trees flower in spring, lead to the ten-storey stairway. The hotel also arranges a two-and-a-half-hour tour around the lake.
Restaurants & bars
Three restaurants share the seventh floor and its lake views, the bar is on the eighth, and a tea house sits beside the pool. Rates sold on the hotel’s own website include a buffet breakfast at The Oriental Brasserie.
- The Oriental Brasserie — modern Chinese and Western cooking with Italian, French and Asian touches and local produce; breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner;
- The Lake View Chinese Restaurant — Hong Kong and Shanghai cuisine made with local ingredients;
- The Japanese Restaurant — modern Japanese cuisine, with teppanyaki at lunch and kaiseki and teppanyaki in the evening;
- The Lobby Bar — wines, cocktails, spirits, coffee, cigars and light snacks; for members and hotel guests only;
- The Tea House — Cantonese dim sum at afternoon tea, handcrafted floral tea, desserts and light meals beside the pool; for members and hotel guests only.
Swimming
There is no beach; swimming is in the 60-metre outdoor infinity pool, built on the overflow principle so that its edge disappears and the water seems to run on into the lake. The Courtyard Pool Villas have private pools of their own.
