About this hotel
General information
Silks Place Taroko sits in the Tianxiang area of Taroko National Park, in Xiulin Township, Hualien County, with the Liwu River running below and the forested walls of Taroko Gorge rising all around. The building follows a modern Chinese style, its interiors taking their cue from the landscape and character of the gorge, while the mountains beyond the windows shift colour with every season.
Its 160 rooms are divided between two parts of the hotel: the Resort, with rooms for couples and families, and The Retreat, a collection of studios and suites whose guests have their own top-floor lounge. There are two restaurants, a rooftop pool facing the gorge, an indoor pool and Wellspring Spa, and a daily programme of yoga, guided hikes, craft workshops and open-air films by the pool. Stays are offered with breakfast or with breakfast and dinner.
Location
The hotel stands on Tianxiang Road deep in Taroko Gorge, inside Taroko National Park. Its own shuttle runs to and from Hualien railway station and Hualien Airport, taking about an hour each way and bookable three days ahead. The train from Taipei to Hualien takes 2–3 hours; parking at the hotel is limited, so the hotel recommends the shuttle or public transport.
Spa
Wellspring Spa, on the lobby floor, offers essential-oil, hot-stone, tea-scented and herbal-compress massages; every treatment room looks out over the gorge, and the spa pool faces the cliffs outside. A short daily session at The Wellness 368 introduces essential oils and simple self-massage. On B1, a private sauna can be booked for 90 minutes by up to four guests from the same room.
Sports & leisure
The roof holds a yoga and fitness room and a pickleball court, with racquets and balls provided. The recreation team runs a daily programme for adults and children:
- morning yoga facing the gorge and evening moonlight yoga, for guests aged 12 and over;
- gardening sessions with mountain plants and a workshop for building bee hotels;
- coffee-ground workshops: textured art, scented tablets, candles, scented cones and a body scrub;
- a guided hike on the Lushui–Wenshan Trail (about two hours, with dirt paths and suspension bridges, ages 6 and over), and a hike on the Dali Trail;
- an open-air cinema by the rooftop pool every evening, watched from beanbags.
For children
The Recreation Center on B1, finished in natural wood, is the hotel's play area for children. Children aged 7 and over can join the gardening sessions and coffee-ground workshops with their parents, and those aged 6 and over the guided hike on the Lushui–Wenshan Trail.
Restaurants & bars
Two restaurants, a lounge for Retreat guests and a rooftop bar:
- Wellesley Buffet Restaurant — buffet breakfast and dinner, international techniques with local produce, indoor and terrace seating among the mountains;
- Mei Yuan Chinese Cuisine — Chinese cooking with local ingredients, named after the plum trees at the entrance: light lunch sets, vegetarian and halal dishes, two private dining rooms;
- The Retreat Lounge — on the top floor with views of Taroko Gorge, reserved for Retreat guests: breakfast, daytime drinks and a chef's set dinner booked in advance;
- Rooftop Pool Bar — afternoon drinks by the fireplace on the roof.
Swimming
On the roof there is an outdoor pool and a warm-water whirlpool, both looking over the gorge. On B1, an indoor pool has heated stone slabs for resting after a swim. Children under 12 use the pools with an adult.
