About this hotel
General information
Grand Hilai Sun Moon Lake is an intimate resort set high above Sun Moon Lake in central Taiwan. Its twelve storeys are angled towards the water, taking in close to 270 degrees of the lake's two basins, and the interiors lean on warm timber, natural textures and quiet tones that shift with the light outside.
There are just 93 rooms, each with its own balcony or terrace and a private bath filled with hot-spring water drawn from 1,600 m below ground — a clear, odourless bicarbonate spring known in Taiwan as the 'beauty spring'. An art collection runs floor by floor, from sculpture and glass to bamboo work and ink painting, and a programme of activities adds lake cruises on the hotel's own yacht, yoga, craft workshops and art tours. Stays are offered with breakfast or on half board, with breakfast and dinner.
Location
The hotel stands above Sun Moon Lake in Nantou County, around 15 minutes on foot from the Sun Moon Lake bus stop. An express bus from Taichung's high-speed rail station takes about 1.5 hours, and a bus from Taichung's main railway station about two. By car it is roughly an hour from Taichung, 2.5 hours from Kaohsiung and three from Taipei. The hotel runs a scheduled shuttle on advance request, and there is underground parking for 100 cars with EV charging.
Spa
SOCIÉ Spa, on the 11th floor, is run by the Japanese beauty house SOCIÉ and works with ESPA oils. The menu covers aromatherapy and hot-stone massage, a signature Grand Hilai Sun Moon Lake body ritual, deep-tissue and bamboo massages, a sleep-focused treatment, a pregnancy massage, Ayurvedic and meditative oil-pour head treatments, scalp revival and four facials, alongside a salon offering hair-washing. On the same floor, the hot-spring baths have three pools at different temperatures, a dry sauna and a steam room, with windows that open onto the lake and the hills.
Sports & leisure
The 12th-floor fitness centre has cardio and strength equipment behind floor-to-ceiling windows facing the lake. Most activities are booked in advance:
- morning and sunset cruises on the hotel's yacht (90 minutes each), with snacks on board in the evening
- gentle lakeside walks, and stand-up paddleboarding with professional photography and transfers
- Sunday-morning yoga with an instructor (ages 10 and over)
- Giant bicycles to borrow for the lakeside cycle path
- craft workshops: kokedama moss balls, fern-woven dragonflies and loofah night lights
- singing-bowl sound evenings and meridian-tapping sessions (ages 12 and over)
- guided tours of the hotel's art collection
- board games and Nintendo Switch consoles, an audio-visual room with karaoke and a private card-games room
Restaurants & bars
Both restaurants sit on the second floor and cook with seasonal, local produce, with wine and champagne poured at dinner.
- The Seasons — Western cuisine with a seafood bar, tableside service and wine pairing; breakfast and dinner
- Sun Moon Garden — Cantonese set menus, fine teas and wines, lake views; dinner
- Sky Lounge — 11th-floor restaurant and bar with light lunches, afternoon tea, signature cocktails and late-night bites, plus live music
- Tea Saloon — ground-floor tea lounge with house teas and local snacks that change monthly, and late-night bites in the evening
Swimming
The outdoor infinity pool on the 12th floor appears to run straight into Sun Moon Lake. It is open to all hotel guests daily from morning until early evening.
Pets
Pets are not allowed; only guide and service animals are admitted to the restaurants.
