About this hotel
General information
The Gaia Hotel sits on a green hillside in Beitou, the hot-spring district on Taipei’s northern edge — a few minutes from the city, yet already among hills and woodland. Its name comes from the ancient Greek goddess of the Earth, and that idea shapes the whole place: interiors pair white with pale natural wood, large windows draw in plenty of daylight, and almost every corner frames a view of its own. Contemporary art hangs throughout, and the lobby is lit by a chandelier of fibre-optic strands and crystal spheres.
The heart of the building is The Library, a four-storey wall of shelves rising to a skylight, where more than 6,000 books stand on 22 tiers and guests may borrow any of them, free, at any hour. The other defining feature is Beitou’s white sulphur spring, which fills the tubs in every room, the public baths and the private hot-spring rooms. Add The Gaia Spa, an outdoor pool, three restaurants and a wine cellar. The whole hotel is non-smoking.
Location
The hotel stands at 1 Qiyan Road in Beitou District, in the north of Taipei. Beitou Park is 500 m away, Thermal Valley 1 km and the Beitou Hot Spring Museum 1.9 km — all a few minutes by car. A free shuttle runs to the hotel from Beitou and Xinbeitou MRT stations; for drivers, the hotel publishes routes from central Taipei and neighbouring districts and offers valet parking.
Spa
The hotel’s water is Beitou’s white sulphur spring, milky and soft on the skin. The public baths are split into men’s and women’s sides and bathing is nude; there is an indoor hot-spring pool, a cold plunge pool, an open-air bath set in a garden with a falling-snow effect, a sauna, a steam room and a rest area. Entry is from age 12, with no more than 20 bathers at a time; hotel guests use the baths free and as often as they like between 07:00 and 23:00, and are asked to book ahead at peak times — 19:30–21:30 each evening and in the morning until noon. Private hot-spring rooms can be taken around the clock for 90 minutes, for two guests or more: each has a spring-fed tub, its own shower, Bvlgari toiletries, light snacks and drinks and a place to rest between soaks, plus a shared lounge with Nespresso coffee and a selection of teas.
The Gaia Spa is the hotel’s own spa brand, built on natural essential oils: its blends start from a base of seven plant oils, among them jojoba and sweet apricot kernel, and the therapists work with Sothys products from France and Johnray from Canada. There is a sunlit room with windows on two sides, a treatment suite for two with its own hot-spring tub and a single treatment room; the spa is open from 10:00 to 22:00.
Sports & leisure
The Lohas Area brings together an outdoor pool of about 20 m and a heated spa pool with massage jets, water columns and bubbles; entry is free for hotel guests. The gym, with panoramic windows over wooded slopes and Beitou, has 12 types of equipment — treadmills, elliptical and rowing machines, stair climbers and dumbbells — and is open to guests aged 16 and over from 07:00 to 22:00. The Library is open 24 hours, and Beitou Park, Thermal Valley and the Beitou Hot Spring Museum are a short walk or a few minutes’ drive away.
Restaurants & bars
There are three restaurants and a wine cellar, and the kitchens work with local produce:
- Piacere — Italian and French cooking from breakfast to dinner, with an afternoon tea that is the restaurant’s best-known offering; its two private dining rooms are decorated with glass panels inlaid with 128 species of Taiwanese butterfly;
- Qiyan ONE — Sichuan and Hunan cuisine made with house-blended spices and produce from small Taiwanese farms: spicy duck pot, Hunan-style fish head with chopped chillies, sesame-oil chicken rice; private dining rooms available;
- Moon Shabu Shabu — shabu-shabu hot pot with seasonal seafood and meats, cooked in Japanese cast-iron pots;
- The Gaia Reserve — an oak-lined, climate-controlled wine cellar holding more than 3,500 bottles of red wine from renowned estates.
Swimming
The outdoor pool in the Lohas Area is about 20 m long and 1.1 m deep, unheated, and looks out over the mountains and the city. It closes from January to March, while the heated spa pool beside it stays open all year. Swimsuits and swim caps are required, children under 12 swim only with a parent, and the area is open from 07:00 to 22:00.
Pets
Pets are not allowed, with the exception of guide dogs.
