Fleur de Chine Hotel

About this hotel

General information

Fleur de Chine Hotel is a hot-spring resort on the northern peninsula of Sun Moon Lake, in the hills of Nantou County in central Taiwan. Part of the Taiwanese group LDC Hotels & Resorts, it has light, unhurried interiors turned towards the water and the slopes, so the views of lake and mountains shift from floor to floor.

The heart of the place is its own spring: a clear, odourless sodium bicarbonate water drawn from a well more than 1,000 m deep and piped into marble tubs in 205 of the 207 rooms, as well as into the public baths. Around it sit a VALMONT spa, a water complex of more than 3,000 m², six restaurants and a daily programme that runs from dawn paddleboarding on the lake to cycling routes and craft workshops.

Location

The hotel stands on the northern shore of Sun Moon Lake, in Yuchi Township, Nantou County, a few minutes' drive along the water from the Shuishe visitor centre. By car the route follows National Freeway No. 6 to the Ailan exit, then mountain highways down to the lake. The hotel runs a daily scheduled shuttle from Taichung's high-speed rail station (about an hour; book by 18:00 the day before), from where public buses also serve the lake, and a direct Kuo-Kuang bus runs from Taipei West Bus Station.

Spa

VALMONT SPA, on the fifth floor, works with the Swiss skincare house VALMONT: the menu covers the Luminosity of Ice, Lift & Firmness and L'Elixir des Glaciers facials, the Alpine Vitality and Peak Serenity & Firmness body treatments, combination rituals and short add-ons such as a gua sha head massage. The signature treatment, created for the hotel, uses light butterfly strokes set to the sounds of an Alpine forest; treatments are by appointment, daily from 14:00 to 23:00.

The Mountain Mist Hot Spring baths on the ground floor have separate men's and women's areas for bathing unclothed, with water at around 42 °C. Children under 6 are not admitted, and those aged 6 to 12 must come with a parent of the same sex.

Sports & leisure

The ground-floor gym looks out over the lake (ages 16 and over). The hotel's daily programme includes:

  • stand-up paddleboarding on Sun Moon Lake at sunrise and during the day, plus SUP yoga and morning Floatfit classes on floating mats
  • bicycle hire for routes around the lake
  • a 13-metre outdoor climbing wall (by reservation, ages 6–65)
  • an early trip to watch the sunrise from Jinlong Mountain
  • a lakeside stroll with a digital audio guide and the Green Trail Adventure Team woodland walk
  • a visit to Kanon Coffee Estate to roast your own beans (book three days ahead)
  • workshops making sachets of pounded local herbs and dyeing fabric with Sun Moon Lake black tea
  • the Noble Hill viewing platform at 790 m with a garden across from the hotel, a games room, and board games and books to borrow
For children

VIKids, a play space for ages 3–9, runs three hour-long sessions a day led by staff, with an ice-breaker, songs, a board game, free play and a dessert; parents can leave children in the team's care (book the day before, minimum two children). The ground floor also has the Cloud Forest playground with a reading corner and story time, and the water complex has a children's zone with a two-metre slide, a 55 cm pool and a 15 cm infant pool.

Restaurants & bars

The six restaurants and bars are spread mainly over the second and third floors and the roof:

  • Crimson — international buffet with an open kitchen and lake views, plus terrace seating; breakfast and dinner
  • KEN CAN by Ken Chan — Cantonese set menus built on seasonal local produce, with private rooms; lunch and dinner
  • Rainbow Cloud — teppanyaki cooked in front of guests; 28 seats and a private room, lunch and dinner
  • Sky Lounge — rooftop restaurant with a 270-degree lake panorama, a mirrored wall and lattice windows; a set dinner of Nantou produce and seafood, and late-night supper (ages 10 and over)
  • Ciao Club — a Southern European-style lounge for guests in designated room types and packages, with an all-day Italian menu, a happy hour of Italian wines and Tuscan tapas, and Sunday champagne brunch (ages 10 and over)
  • Lobby Bar — coffee, English tea, fresh juices, fruit and desserts on the third floor
Swimming

Water World, on the ground floor, covers more than 3,000 m² across five zones: a hot-spring area with hot and cold pools and a sauna, a hydrotherapy zone, a swimming pool, a sun deck and a children's area. The outdoor children's pool opens during the day and closes from 1 December to the end of February; swimwear and a swimming cap are required.

Pets

Pets are not allowed in rooms, restaurants or public areas, but cats and dogs can stay free of charge in metal crates in a boarding area on the third floor; the hotel provides the space, water and bowls only, so feeding and walking are left to owners. Booking ahead is recommended.

Rooms

The 207 rooms and suites occupy the fifth to tenth floors: Classic rooms on 5–7, Premier rooms on 8–10 and most suites on the tenth. They face the mountains, the lake or both, each has a private balcony and 205 of them have a marble hot-spring tub; there are Western rooms with beds and Japanese rooms with tatami.
