About this hotel
General information
Carlton Hotel St. Moritz sits high on the slope above Lake St. Moritz, set back from the bustle of the resort yet only minutes from it. It is a winter hotel, open from December to March, and with just 60 rooms and suites it is among the most intimate of the town’s luxury addresses, built around space, discretion and a generous ratio of staff to guests.
The hotel belongs to the Tschuggen Collection, The Leading Hotels of the World and Swiss Deluxe Hotels, and holds three Michelin Keys. Its social heart is the Bel Etage with its open fire, together with a sun terrace that looks across the Engadine. The Ticino designer Carlo Rampazzi shaped the restaurant interiors, and the kitchen spans two Michelin stars at Da Vittorio and a regional table at the Grand Restaurant. At the top of the house, the 386 m² Carlton Penthouse ranks among the largest penthouse suites in the Swiss Alps.
Location
The hotel overlooks Lake St. Moritz in the Upper Engadine. Engadin Airport in Samedan is 7 km away, with a complimentary transfer; the international airports of Zurich and Milan are about three hours by road. Guests arriving by train are met at St. Moritz station, and a free electric limousine service runs around the resort 24 hours a day.
Spa
The 1,200 m² Carlton Spa spreads over three floors with views of the Engadine mountains. It holds a water world with two pools, sauna and steam areas, relaxation rooms, a fitness centre and a yoga space, plus a Beauty, Nail & Hair Lounge. Treatments follow the holistic Moving Mountains concept and use organic or certified natural products, from massages to facials, body and detox rituals. A Private Spa Suite with whirlpool, sauna and steam bath takes up to four guests, and the Dream Butler evening ritual pairs a PHARMOS NATUR massage with a room prepared for sleep.
Sports & leisure
The Technogym fitness centre is open to hotel guests around the clock, complimentary yoga classes run several times a week and private training can be arranged. An Outdoor Butler helps plan days in the mountains, and the hotel’s programme of experiences includes:
- a torchlit walk to Lej Nair and early-morning forest bathing
- guided ice bathing in Lake St. Moritz
- an expedition into the ice caves of the Morteratsch Glacier and snowshoeing from Muottas Muragl
- skijoring, husky sledding, winter canyoning and tandem paragliding
- sledging on the floodlit Preda–Bergün run, skating on the frozen lake, horse riding and carriage rides through the Staz forest
- a guided visit to the Segantini Museum and an ice-sculpting session
For children
The Carlton Kids & Teens Club, themed around the Swiss children’s hero Schellen-Ursli, is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10 am to 7 pm for children aged three and over, with trained multilingual staff; a PlayStation and table football keep teenagers interested too. Babysitters can be booked at extra cost. Two daily splash times are set aside for children in the pool, and the spa offers younger guests manicures, gentle massages and hair services.
Restaurants & bars
Two restaurants, a bar lounge and a terrace make up the Carlton’s dining:
- Da Vittorio – St. Moritz — Italian cooking by the Cerea brothers, two Michelin stars and 18 GaultMillau points, dinner Wednesday to Sunday
- Grand Restaurant — chef Salvatore Frequente’s cuisine built on local produce and wild ingredients from the Engadine forests, 16 GaultMillau points
- Carlton Bar and Bel Etage — fireside bar for afternoon tea, snacks and drinks
- Carlton Sun Terrace — lunch with the lake and mountains in view
- Fondue Gondola — cheese fondue served in gondolas in front of the hotel, for two to four
Swimming
The spa has two pools: an indoor-outdoor pool at around 35 °C with hydrotherapy features, and a 31 °C sports pool for swimming lengths.
Skiing
A free ski shuttle runs to the St. Moritz ski areas. For something rarer, the hotel can reserve a 4.2 km piste on Corvatsch for an entire evening, with a ski instructor on request and the Outdoor Butler on hand.
Pets
Well-behaved dogs are welcome, up to two per room, with a blanket, bowls and towels provided. They may join their owners in the lobby, the bar, Da Vittorio and on the sun terrace, but not in the spa.
