Baur au Lac

About this hotel

General information

Baur au Lac stands in its own park on the shore of Lake Zurich, at the head of Bahnhofstrasse. Founded in 1844 by the Austrian Johannes Baur, it has remained with one Zurich family, the Krachts, ever since. Empress Elisabeth of Austria spent her summers here, royalty and aristocracy followed, and Richard Wagner first presented the opening act of Die Walküre in the hotel, singing it himself with Franz Liszt at the piano. The Treaty of Zurich was signed here in 1859, and in 1892 Bertha von Suttner persuaded Alfred Nobel to create a peace prize.

Discretion, though, remains the house’s defining tradition. Today there are three restaurants, among them the two-Michelin-star Pavillon, two bars, a nightclub, the Vanity beauty salon and a rooftop gym. Six function rooms host meetings and celebrations, and the hotel arranges weddings and dedicated programmes for newlyweds.

Location

The hotel sits in a private lakeside park at the start of Bahnhofstrasse, five minutes from the main railway station and 12 km (about 20 minutes) from Zurich Airport. The business and financial districts and the city’s main sights are close at hand.

Spa

The Vanity salon offers a range of massages, face and body treatments and hairdressing, along with a solarium.

Sports & leisure

The gym sits on the hotel roof, with a stretching area and a physiotherapist on hand.

For children

Babysitting can be arranged on request.

Restaurants & bars

Three restaurants, two bars and a summer terrace:

  • Pavillon — a modern take on classic haute cuisine by chef Laurent Eperon, two Michelin stars
  • Rive Gauche — Mediterranean and grilled dishes plus a vegetarian menu, backed by a deep wine cellar; one of Zurich’s favourite meeting places since 1998
  • Rive Gauche Bar — drinks and snacks
  • Rive Gauche La Terrasse — summer terrace and garden looking over the lake and the Alps
  • Le Hall — relaxed lobby bar with a broad drinks list
  • Baur’s — a warm, comfortable brasserie hung with world-class art
