Alex Alpine Resort – Spa & Sports

About this hotel

General information

Alex Alpine Resort – Spa & Sports is a family-run hotel in Zermatt founded by Alex Perren Sr., who in his day was the resort’s youngest ski instructor and mountain guide; his maternal great-grandfather, Peter Taugwalder, made the first ascent of the Matterhorn with Edward Whymper. Christina Perren and René Hürlimann run the house today.

The building is a classic log chalet, and inside it holds a collection of art and furnishings — hand-turned furniture, brocade curtains, velvet cushions, carvings and paintings of the Matterhorn. A digital exhibition, The Alex Museum, tells the story of the family and the village. The hotel is known for Zermatt’s only indoor tennis hall, a large wellness centre and the Valais-focused cooking of chef Frédéric Fischer.

Location

The hotel is in Zermatt, at the foot of the Matterhorn. Zermatt is car-free: cars stay in Täsch and guests continue by train or taxi, then are met at the station by the hotel’s electric vehicle and driven to the door with their luggage at no charge. By train, Geneva and Milan Malpensa airports are about 4 hours away and Zurich about 3.5 hours; Air Zermatt also flies helicopter transfers.

Spa

The wellness centre is free for hotel guests: an indoor pool with massage jets, bubble loungers and splash showers, a separate whirlpool, Finnish sauna, steam bath, infrared seat and experience shower. Massages and beauty treatments are booked in advance; the saunas are for guests aged 16 and over.

Sports & leisure

Sport at the hotel centres on an indoor tennis hall with a T-Floor surface, a Technogym fitness room, a yoga room, badminton and table tennis, with AquaFit and Aqua Run classes in the pool. The Game Lounge has a piano, table football, billiards and an interactive games table. Around Zermatt, winter brings skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing and ice skating, summer brings hiking, mountain biking, climbing and paragliding, and the Matterhorn Golf Club in Randa is a few minutes’ drive away.

For children

Children have their own menu at lunch and dinner, and the Game Lounge offers an interactive games table and table football. Children may use the indoor pool when supervised by an adult.

Restaurants & bars

The kitchen is led by chef Frédéric Fischer, who has cooked Valais cuisine in Zermatt for more than two decades.

  • Alex Grill — evening restaurant for meat and fish, seasonal Valais dishes and an extensive wine list
  • Bodega Bacchus — a historic wine cellar with a single long table for up to 22 guests, used for private dinners and gourmet menus
  • Le Jardin — a light-filled winter garden with a sun terrace, serving lunch and snacks with mountain views
  • Alex Lounge & Bar — cocktails, wines and one of Zermatt’s largest whisky selections
  • Smokies — a cigar lounge with a curated cigar selection and whiskies
Skiing

The hotel has a ski room; Julen Sport, about four minutes’ walk away, collects skis from it in the evening and returns them serviced the next morning.
