Grand Hôtel Stockholm

About this hotel

General information

Since 1874 Grand Hôtel Stockholm has looked out from the Blasieholmen waterfront across the water to the Royal Palace and Gamla Stan, the city’s old town. It was conceived as Sweden’s first hotel to stand comparison with the great hotels of continental Europe, and its classical façade above the harbour is still one of the defining sights of the city. Some of the furniture made for the early hotel remains in use, simply reupholstered over the years, while every room and suite is individually decorated and free of plastic.

Its grand public rooms have long been a stage for Stockholm society: the mirrored Spegelsalen, and the Vinterträdgården, a vast winter garden added in 1909 as a green refuge from snow and ice, which became a jazz-age dance floor in the 1930s. In all, 24 event spaces host anything from a meeting for two to a reception for 800, some of them in the Bolinderska Palatset, a listed national heritage building. A concierge team largely drawn from Les Clefs d’Or, round-the-clock room service, a chauffeured fleet that includes electric cars and the Grand Affections boutique complete the picture.

Location

The hotel stands on Blasieholmen in central Stockholm, facing the Royal Palace and Gamla Stan across the water; Stockholm Central Station is about a 15-minute walk away. From Stockholm Arlanda and Stockholm Bromma airports guests can take a taxi or be met on request by one of the hotel’s limousines; alternatively, the airport bus runs to Central Station, as does the Arlanda Express train from Arlanda. The concierge can also book the Arlanda VIP Service.

Spa

Nordic Spa & Fitness takes its cue from the sea and islands of the Stockholm archipelago, with Swedish granite and stone from Gotland in its interiors. The bathing area has a warm pool, a hydromassage pool, a cold plunge pool, a steam room, a dry sauna, an experience shower and a cold bucket shower, plus a relaxation area and a quiet room. Treatments use organic Nordic products and include facials, 60–90-minute massages and signature rituals such as Nordic Detox (cupping, gua sha and connective-tissue massage), Nordic Beauty with a cranberry scrub, and Grand Flow; the team also includes a doctor of traditional Chinese medicine and a chiropractor. Private spa suites overlooking the water and the Royal Palace have their own sauna, a pool for two and massage rooms. The minimum age is 16.

Sports & leisure

The fitness club, fitted with Technogym equipment and looking across the water to the Royal Palace, is free for hotel guests; it has a private studio for yoga and stretching, yoga and Pilates classes for hotel guests, personal trainers and a fitness bar serving healthy breakfasts, lunches and drinks. Beyond the hotel, the concierge arranges helicopter tours over Stockholm, private yacht charters, theatre tickets and chauffeured cars.

For children

The concierge can book experienced babysitters, all over 20 and trained in first aid, who with the parents’ permission can take children for a walk or to a museum. Guests under 18 must be accompanied by a guardian, and the spa is open to those aged 16 and over.

Restaurants & bars

The hotel’s restaurants and bars run from Swedish classics to a seafood tasting menu, and room service is available around the clock.

  • The Veranda — Swedish classics with views of the water and the Royal Palace: a breakfast buffet, lunch, à la carte dinners and a traditional smörgåsbord served with the hotel’s own aquavit
  • Matbaren — a relaxed modern bistro serving medium-sized dishes from a seasonal menu that changes daily, at tables or along the long bar counter
  • Seafood Gastro — a tasting menu of fish, shellfish, seaweed, coastal greens and other produce from in and around the water
  • Grand Soleil — cooking from the French and Italian Riviera at lunch and dinner, with wines by the glass
  • The Cadier Bar — cocktails and champagne, a bar menu, à la carte breakfast and afternoon tea every day
  • The Champagne Bar — a bar beside the lobby pouring champagnes from leading houses, vintages included, by the glass
  • Grand Café — a small café on the quay in front of the hotel, open in the warmer months, with coffee, salads, sandwiches and sweets from the hotel’s own patisserie
  • Wine cellar — some 2,500 labels centred on Europe’s classic regions, with private dinners for up to eight and sommelier-led tastings
Swimming

Swimming is indoors at Nordic Spa & Fitness, which has a warm pool, a hydromassage pool and a cold plunge pool; the private spa suites each add a pool for two. Towels, robes and slippers are provided, but guests bring their own swimwear.

Pets

The hotel and its restaurants are pet-free.
