Arctic Bath

About this hotel

General information

Arctic Bath is a floating hotel and spa on the Lule River at Harads, deep in Swedish Lapland. Its centrepiece is a circular main building set out on the water that recalls the river’s log-driving past and holds the spa, the restaurant, a lounge and a bar. Swedish architects conceived the whole as a tribute to the region’s timber heritage: in summer it floats freely, in winter it is locked into the river ice.

There are just 12 cabins, six on the water and six on the birch-lined shore, with glass walls and interiors of wood and stone. The approach rests on four pillars of wellbeing – nutrition, movement, peace of mind and body care – with sauna and cold-water bathing at the heart of every stay. Open all year, it has the northern lights overhead in the dark months and the midnight sun in summer. Arctic Bath belongs to the Considerate Collection of Small Luxury Hotels of the World.

Location

The hotel lies on the banks of the Lule River at Harads in Swedish Lapland, a 10–15-minute walk from the village. Luleå Airport, with daily flights from Stockholm, is about 85 km away (around 1 hour 15 minutes by transfer), and the nearest railway station, Boden, is 40 minutes away and served by night trains from Stockholm. Transfers can be arranged by shared or private car, and from the airport also by helicopter. Jokkmokk, the Sámi cultural centre north of the Arctic Circle, is about an hour’s drive.

Spa

The spa occupies the circular main building, and its signature ritual is called Julevädno – the Sámi name for the Lule River – alternating sauna heat with plunges into the open river bath at the building’s centre. Guests have two dry saunas, a steam sauna, two outdoor hot tubs and the cold bath, and full spa access, robes and towels are part of every stay. Treatments – a two-hour signature ritual for two, scalp and neck, body, a clay-and-botanical back treatment and a Nordic berry facial – use organic products from C/O Gerd, a skincare house based in Jokkmokk. Private yoga and meditation in the cabin, reiki, shiatsu and Ayurvedic treatments can be arranged on request.

Sports & leisure

Activities follow the seasons and are led by local guides:

  • in winter – snowmobile trails, dog sledding with huskies and Alaskan Malamutes, horseback rides under the northern lights, ice fishing on a private lake, sleigh rides and aurora outings with photography tips
  • in summer – canoes and stand-up paddleboards to rent at the front desk, midnight-sun swimming, fishing, husky hikes and wild-food foraging walks
  • all year – encounters with Sámi reindeer herders, evenings in a lávvu, a day of Sámi culture in Jokkmokk, moose safaris, heli-hiking, horse riding, walking trails from the door (maps at reception) and trips to the Storforsen rapids
For children

Families are housed in the three Land Family Cabins, two-level cabins on the shore that sleep up to five, children up to 16 included, with three single beds for them in the loft. The hotel describes its restaurant as relaxed and family-friendly.

Restaurants & bars

The floating restaurant serves à la carte breakfast and lunch and a set menu at dinner built on produce from Norrbotten, where old northern recipes are reworked with modern technique and the menu tracks the seasons from snowbound winter to midnight-sun summer. For dining outdoors there is the Arctic Fireside Table, an open-fire dinner of Arctic flavours under the night sky. The main building also has a lounge and a bar; there is no room service.

Swimming

The river is part of the daily routine: the spa’s cold bath is filled by the Lule River itself, and the deck of every Water Cabin gives private access to the water – in summer the place for a morning swim or a midnight one in full daylight.

Pets

Pets are welcome in some of the Water Cabins and Land Family Cabins for a one-off fee; the Land Suite Cabins and the main building with the restaurant are not open to them. Guests should mention a pet when booking.
