About this hotel
General information
In Sabi Sabi’s “yesterday, today and tomorrow” philosophy, Selati Camp is yesterday: an intimate camp that recalls the great safari era at the turn of the twentieth century. It grew out of an old homestead in the reserve’s northern section, and its interiors were gathered from antique shops and railway museums — station signs, shunters’ lanterns, period furniture. At night the camp is lit by the soft glow of those lanterns, which gives it a quiet, faintly nostalgic air.
With only seven suites, Selati is often taken on an exclusive basis by small groups of friends or family. Breakfast, lunch and dinner, drinks (except French Champagne and Private Collection wines), day and after-dark game drives in open vehicles and guided walks are included. Children over 13 are always welcome; younger children only when the whole camp is booked exclusively.
Location
The camp overlooks the dry Msuthlu riverbed and a waterhole beyond it, within Sabi Sabi Private Game Reserve in the Sabi Sand (Sabie Game Reserve), the south-western part of the Greater Kruger, about 500 km from Johannesburg. Federal Air flies daily from Johannesburg straight to the Sabi Sabi airstrip, with a short hop there from Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport as well; the drive from the airstrip to the camp is complimentary. Airlink flies to Skukuza, and transfers from there or from Kruger Mpumalanga International (around 1.5–2 hours by road) are arranged on request; Johannesburg is about five hours away by car.
Spa
Selati Camp has no spa of its own: guests book Amani Spa & Wellness treatments at the neighbouring Bush Lodge and Earth Lodge, where the menu covers massages, body rituals and treatments drawn from African healing traditions, using the organic Amani range made with indigenous botanicals.
Sports & leisure
Game drives with a ranger and tracker go out twice a day, before dawn and in the late afternoon, in open vehicles, with the evening drive returning after dark. Guests can also enjoy:
- guided walking safaris focused on the reserve’s ecology;
- the safari deck above the riverbed and the waterhole;
- an outdoor lounge where animals can be watched passing the camp;
- a swimming pool;
- the Trading Post, a boutique for curios and local keepsakes.
Restaurants & bars
Cooking at Selati is home-style and seasonal, in the spirit of the old safari days, and the chefs adapt to a wide range of dietary needs. Breakfast is plated, lunch follows a chef’s menu paired with South African wines, dinner is à la carte, and high tea is served before the afternoon drive.
- Farmhouse Kitchen — an early twentieth-century farmhouse kitchen with a single long antique table for family-style meals;
- the boma — open-air dinners around the fire in a traditional enclosure;
- the safari deck — a circular deck beneath the trees above the Msuthlu riverbed, also used for meals;
- the bar and lounge — railway memorabilia, books on the safari era, flagship South African wines, local spirits and international labels;
- private dining in the suite — for guests of the Honeymoon Suite and the Ivory Presidential Suite.
Swimming
The camp has an outdoor swimming pool, and the Ivory Presidential Suite has its own private plunge pool.
