About this hotel
General information
Kruger Shalati is a train permanently parked on the historic Selati Bridge above the Sabie River, deep inside Kruger National Park. The Selati railway once crossed the river here, and in the 1920s, before the national park was even proclaimed, tourist trains stopped overnight on this very spot, giving the first visitors their introduction to the region’s wildlife. The restored carriages revisit that era in a contemporary key, with glass walls, African design and pieces made by local craftspeople.
There are 31 rooms in all: 24 carriage suites on the bridge and seven Bridge House suites in the garden alongside it. The Sabie flows all year, so elephants, hippos, buffalo and crocodiles come down to drink every day, and the surrounding bush is Big Five country. Stays include all meals, house wines, local spirits and beers, and two game drives a day. Guests aged 12 and over stay in the carriages on the bridge; children aged 6–11 stay in the Bridge House.
Location
The lodge stands at Skukuza in the south of Kruger National Park, next to Skukuza Rest Camp. Skukuza Airport is 4.9 km away, and the return road transfer in an open safari vehicle is included, doubling as a short game drive. Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport is 110 km away, about two hours, and Johannesburg roughly five hours by car. Guests may also drive in themselves, but must arrive by 17:30, as the park forbids road travel once its gates close.
Spa
There is no spa building: treatments are given by visiting therapists in the room or, weather permitting, on the Northern Deck. The signature Xigiya “Knob Kiri” massage is worked with a traditional wooden stick, lasts 90 minutes and ends with a head massage. The menu also covers a shea butter massage with warm herbal poultices, aromatherapy, hot stones, deep tissue, Africology facials, hand and foot rituals and a couples’ massage.
Sports & leisure
The day is shaped by two game drives with rangers in open vehicles, one at first light and one towards dusk. In between, guests can lie by the pool, watch birds from the deck over the river or browse the lodge boutique. Also on offer:
- a private safari vehicle on request;
- binoculars to rent;
- a round at Skukuza Golf Course, nine unfenced holes in the wild, 15 minutes from the lodge;
- in-room dining at any time during the stay.
Restaurants & bars
Dining is reserved for overnight guests, and the cooking is seasonal and largely locally sourced.
- Bridge House restaurant — a 66-seat restaurant facing the Sabie River, serving African-inspired dishes;
- Trackside Dining — a lantern-lit space beside the tracks built from reclaimed railway material, corrugated iron and leadwood, for dinners drawing on Shangaan cooking, late drinks around fire pits and private dinners.
Swimming
The lodge has three pools, two of them beside the Selati Bridge. The main one overhangs the river level with the carriage floors, next to a viewing deck, so swimmers may spot crocodiles, hippos, buffalo and elephants below. Another pool with a deck belongs to the Bridge House. The pools are unheated, and the Sunset Suite has its own plunge pool.
Rooms
The 24 Luxury Carriage Suites are set in the carriages on the bridge, while the seven Bridge House suites occupy a garden house beside it, looking out over the river and the lit-up train. Two rooms are designed for universal access.
Every room has a minibar restocked daily, a safe, a coffee and tea station, Wi-Fi, air conditioning, USB points, a hairdryer, a wardrobe and bath products in the lodge’s signature scent.
