Arabella Hotel, Golf & Spa

About this hotel

General information

Arabella Hotel, Golf & Spa is a Southern Sun country hotel on the Overberg coast, set above the Bot River Lagoon. It lies within the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO-listed area counted among the richest floral regions on earth, where fynbos-covered slopes, mountain ridges and the broad sheet of the lagoon fill most of the views.

At the heart of the estate is an 18-hole championship golf course laid out along the water's edge. The rest of hotel life revolves around Arabella Spa and its indoor hydro-pool, three pools, Jamani Restaurant and the fireside Laguna Lounge. There are 145 rooms and suites, each with floor-to-ceiling glass doors onto a private balcony or terrace. It makes a calm base for combining golf, spa time and outings along the whale coast around Hermanus.

Location

The hotel stands on the Arabella Country Estate off the R44 at Kleinmond, between Hermanus and Betty's Bay, on the shore of the Bot River Lagoon in the Western Cape. Central Cape Town is about 90 minutes by road and Cape Town International Airport roughly an hour; the hotel has a helipad and offers an airport handling service. The coast is a few minutes' drive away.

Spa

Arabella Spa offers massages with bespoke blended oils, body scrubs and wraps, facials, couples' rituals, treatments designed for men and care for mothers-to-be. Body and skin care uses Lillian Terry, BABOR and Sea of Spa, with Bio Sculpture for hands and feet. The hydrotherapy area has an indoor pool with water jets and massage stations, a sauna and a steam room; treatments are by appointment.

Sports & leisure

Golf leads the programme, though the estate offers more:

  • Arabella Golf Course, 18 holes and par 72, running beside the lagoon with views of the fynbos-clad Kogelberg mountains; the 8th, the 9th and the closing 18th are its best-known holes
  • a warm-up area, driving range bays, chipping and putting greens, GPS golf carts, a clubhouse restaurant and a pro shop with club hire
  • lessons and clinics with the club's golf professional
  • a tennis court, volleyball and putt-putt
  • a gym with cardio and resistance machines, free weights, a cross trainer and a rowing machine
  • a concierge and travel desk to plan outings: Overberg hiking trails, the Kogelberg Nature Reserve, whale watching in Hermanus, the African penguin colony at Stony Point in Betty's Bay, horse riding and wine tasting in the Elgin Valley
For children

The golf club runs a junior golf programme, and Jamani Restaurant has a dedicated children's menu.

Restaurants & bars

Cooking leans on local produce, and most venues look out over the pool and lagoon:

  • Jamani Restaurant — the main restaurant, with a large balcony above the pool: breakfast and buffets, a relaxed all-day menu and farm-to-table à la carte dinners of international classics and contemporary South African dishes
  • Barnabas Bar — pool-view bar serving drinks, cakes and light snacks through the day, with a signature fynbos gin cocktail
  • Laguna Lounge — a lounge with panoramic windows and a fire on cooler days, for coffee, tea, cakes, afternoon tea and treats made with fynbos honey
  • the golf clubhouse — a restaurant beside the course
  • in-room dining
Swimming

There are three pools: the main outdoor pool with a waterfall, a sun deck and mountain views, a lap pool, and the indoor hydro-pool in the spa. The hotel sits on the lagoon shore, and the sandy beaches of the coast are a short drive away.
