About this hotel
General information
Phinda Zuka is the smallest lodge in Phinda Private Game Reserve: just four individual thatched suites in the densely wooded Zuka Hills, overlooking a waterhole visited through the day by nyala, elephant and birds. It was once the private home of one of the families behind the reserve, and it still feels like a shared house; Zuka means “dawn”. The lodge takes no more than 10 guests. Suites can be booked one by one, or the whole lodge can be reserved for a single family or group, with its own guide, tracker, chef and butler.
Interiors work with clay, wood, woven pieces and African handcraft in soft, earthy tones. The reserve itself, 29,866 hectares across seven distinct habitats, was created from former farmland that has since been returned to the wild; Phinda means “the return” in Zulu. The Big Five are all here, though Phinda is best known for its cheetah and black rhino, while the sand forest shelters the tiny suni and red duiker antelope. It was around Zuka that Phinda’s leopards were first habituated, and they are still often seen close to the lodge.
Location
The lodge lies beneath the Zuka Hills in the south of Phinda Private Game Reserve, in Zululand in northern KwaZulu-Natal. The reserve sits between the Indian Ocean and the Lebombo Mountains and borders iSimangaliso Wetland Park, South Africa’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site, and from Zuka both its northern and southern reaches are within easy range. Federal Air runs daily scheduled flights to the reserve’s airstrip from Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport, which Airlink serves daily from Johannesburg, and private charters can fly in from anywhere in South Africa; transfers between the airstrip and the lodge are included. Alternatively, fly to Richards Bay for a scheduled road transfer of about two hours, or to Durban for one of about three and a half; the drive from Johannesburg takes around seven hours.
Spa
There is no spa at the lodge itself: qualified therapists give massages with natural Healing Earth products in the suites, and a gym-in-a-basket allows light functional training in the room. Guests who want more can visit the massage sala and gym at nearby Phinda Mountain Lodge.
Sports & leisure
Game drives in open 4×4 vehicles, with no more than six guests to a vehicle, set out twice a day, early in the morning and late in the afternoon, carrying on after dark; one-hour guided nature walks and a visit to community projects in the villages around the reserve are also included. When the lodge is booked for sole use it comes with its own vehicle and guide; otherwise a private vehicle or the specially equipped photographic vehicle is available at extra cost. Also at additional cost, the reserve offers:
- big game walks, specialist walking safaris and black rhino tracking on foot;
- birding safaris (more than 400 species are recorded at Phinda) and photographic safaris with an expert guide;
- hands-on conservation experiences: rhino notching, pangolin monitoring and elephant collaring;
- e-bike rides through the sand forest on four routes of 5–22 km (from 12 years) and boat trips on the Mzinene River;
- a night’s sleepout under the stars;
- ocean safaris for dolphins and, in season, humpback whales, scuba diving on the Sodwana Bay reefs, a half-day on the Maputaland beaches and seasonal night outings to see leatherback and loggerhead turtles nesting;
- visits to a Zulu village.
The lodge also hosts intimate weddings and blessings.
For children
Children aged 3–12 join the WILDchild programme: each receives a backpack of age-appropriate gifts, and guides and lodge staff run seasonal activities such as bark rubbing, bug collecting, frog safaris and baking with the chef. There are children’s menus, and childminding is available on request.
Restaurants & bars
At the heart of the lodge is a clay-toned firepit above the waterhole, where guests gather before dinner, and beyond the deck a traditional open-air boma where dinner is served around the fire and an outdoor oven. The guest lounge has an interactive kitchen where guests can help their private chef make breakfast or simply watch. There is also a bar and a library, meals are plated with butler service, private dining can be arranged, and meals are often taken by the pool with the waterhole in view. Kosher and halal meals are available at extra cost with at least four weeks’ notice. Three meals a day, soft drinks, house wines, local spirits and beers are included in the stay.
Swimming
The lodge pool looks out over the waterhole and is a favourite spot for warm afternoons and the occasional meal; the suites do not have plunge pools of their own.
