Hotel Palace Portorož

About this hotel

General information

Hotel Palace Portorož is a palace of 1910 on the Adriatic shore of Slovene Istria and one of the cultural landmarks of Portorož. The restored historic building is joined to a contemporary wing, and its centrepiece remains the Crystal Hall, a ballroom with restored crystal chandeliers and gilded ornament from the hotel’s first years. Over more than a century it has received royalty and staged a long line of society occasions.

There are 183 rooms and suites across the traditional and modern wings, each with its own character, from the period interiors of the palace to the cleaner lines of the new building. The historic Forma Viva park lies in front of the hotel and the sandy Palace Beach is a few hundred metres’ walk away. On site are the Rose Spa with its seawater pools, three restaurants including the Michelin-recommended Restaurant Sophia, two bars and a café in the park.

Location

The hotel sits on the Portorož seafront, looking out over the Adriatic, within walking distance of the resort’s restaurants, cafés and shops. The old town of Piran and the Sečovlje Salina Nature Park are close by. Trieste Airport is about an hour’s drive away, and transfers can be arranged in advance.

Spa

The Rose Spa covers 1,500 m² and takes its design cue from the local rose. It has interconnected indoor and outdoor seawater pools, a whirlpool, Finnish herbal, aromatic steam and Biosalt saunas, 10 treatment rooms and a pool bar. Massages, peelings, baths, facials and body treatments use Biologique Recherche, Thalgo and Bonistra products; signatures include a local olive oil massage scented with rose, the Istrian SensEscape facial, a couples ritual and the Royal Facelift using the Gua Sha technique.

Sports & leisure

The indoor and outdoor seawater pools are heated to 28 °C, with a whirlpool at 32 °C alongside, and there is a modern fitness centre. The hotel can arrange boat trips, including on a vintage boat, to Venice, Miramare Castle, along the Slovenian coast or to the Croatian Brijuni islands, as well as cycling routes of every level, among them the historic Parenzana trail through vineyards and olive groves.

For children

Families are welcome, with connecting family rooms and children’s menus in the restaurants.

Restaurants & bars

The kitchens give Istrian flavours a contemporary reading, with Italian and international influences.

  • Restaurant Sophia — Mediterranean cooking and seasonal Istrian dishes, recommended by the Michelin Guide and named after Sophia Loren
  • Restaurant Fleur de Sel — local traditional and modern dishes in a room overlooking the sea
  • Crystal Hall — breakfast in the historic ballroom beneath its 1910 chandeliers
  • Palace Club — lobby bar with a considered spirits list and house cocktails
  • Pool Bar — coffee, tea, cocktails, cold-pressed juices and light meals by the pool
  • Forma Viva — café for pastries and Italian coffee in the historic park in front of the hotel
