Raffles Singapore

About this hotel

General information

Raffles Singapore is one of the few nineteenth-century hotels in the world still receiving guests. It opened in 1887 and was declared a National Monument of Singapore in 1987. The white neo-Renaissance Main Building dates from 1899, the Palm Court wing from 1894 and the Bras Basah wing from 1904, all linked by shaded verandahs, courtyards and tropical gardens that cover more than a quarter of the grounds.

It is an all-suite hotel: 115 suites with ceilings over four metres high, teak floors, antiques and quietly modern comforts, each looked after round the clock by the Raffles Butler team. The hotel is known for the Long Bar, where the Singapore Sling was first mixed, for afternoon tea in its sunlit atrium, the North Indian Tiffin Room and the shops and restaurants of the Raffles Arcade.

Location

The hotel stands at 1 Beach Road in the Civic District, the historic and business heart of Singapore, close to the Esplanade theatres and the city’s convention centre, with an MRT station a few minutes’ walk away. Changi Airport is about 20 km away, roughly 20 minutes by car; the hotel can arrange a private transfer or a taxi.

Spa

Raffles Spa is set within the Raffles Arcade. Its treatment suites are named after gemstones, and the Gem Suite is a private space for two with its own thermal facilities. The shared thermal area has an aroma steam room with salt vapour, a herbal sauna, a vitality pool with Peruvian pink salt and an ice fountain, with separate relaxation lounges for women and men. Facials use Omorovicza, body work includes the Biologique Recherche P50 gommage, and there is a studio for hand and foot care. The signature Sumatra Healing Ceremony combines herbal compresses, exfoliation and Indonesian massage; hatha yoga can be arranged.

Sports & leisure

The 24-hour fitness centre has Technogym cardio machines and free weights, with personal training on request, and there is a 25-metre heated outdoor pool. Experiences reserved for hotel guests include a private tour of The Intan, a Peranakan home museum, with return transfers in a Raffles limousine, and a self-guided three-hour hawker food trail through some of the city’s best-known spots for its multicultural street food. The concierge team plans personal routes around Singapore, and the Raffles Arcade and Raffles Boutique sell souvenirs, homeware and gourmet products.

Restaurants & bars

The restaurants and bars fill historic rooms of the Main Building and the Raffles Arcade, and in-suite dining runs around the clock.

  • 1887 — a tasting experience that reworks recipes from the hotel’s past with modern French technique and Singapore’s many flavours, in the former formal dining room of the Main Building
  • Yì — Chinese cooking, from Cantonese classics to rarer regional dishes, with a private dining room
  • Butcher's Block — wood-fire cooking in an open kitchen, a whole-animal, low-waste tasting menu and an extensive wine list
  • Tiffin Room — North Indian cuisine served since 1892, in traditional tiffin boxes with tableside service
  • The Grand Lobby — afternoon tea with JING loose-leaf teas beneath a tall skylit atrium, plus weekday breakfast
  • Long Bar — a two-storey bar styled on 1920s plantation life, home of the Singapore Sling, where peanut shells are brushed straight onto the floor
  • Writers Bar — an intimate bar for handcrafted drinks
  • Raffles Courtyard — an open-air garden setting for Southeast Asian dishes and cocktails

Several private dining rooms are available, among them the Chairman's Room, which serves the Tiffin Room menu.

Swimming

The heated 25-metre outdoor pool is open daily from 7am to 7pm.
