Denis Private Island

About this hotel

General information

Denis Private Island occupies an entire coral island of about 150 hectares, ringed by white sand and reef and given over wholly to its guests. There are just 22 free-standing cottages and a single villa, spread along the shore among palms and casuarinas. Their furniture and timber floors are made in the island’s own carpentry workshop, and every cottage has an open-air bathroom and a private garden courtyard.

Life here follows nature’s pace: there is no mobile signal, and no internet or television in the cottages, while conservation programmes run across more than 50 hectares of restored woodland. Rare birds breed on the island, sea turtles come ashore to nest, giant tortoises roam freely, and the lagoon is protected as a marine spawning ground. The kitchen relies on produce from the island’s own farm and gardens.

Location

Denis Island lies in the Indian Ocean 95 km north of Mahé, about 30 minutes by light aircraft to the island’s own airstrip; private charters by plane or helicopter can be arranged on request.

Spa

There is no spa building as such: treatments take place in the open air, on a cottage terrace or in the shade of the casuarinas. Most of the products, from scrubs to oils, are made in the Seychelles from local ingredients, and the Beachfront Spa Cottages each have their own massage pavilion in the courtyard.

Sports & leisure

Daily nature walks introduce the island, from searching the woods for rare birds to looking for turtle tracks on the beach in nesting season. Bicycles are the easy way around, and there is a tennis court, billiards and a cosy library stocked with board games, books and magazines. The reef-sheltered lagoon suits snorkelling, canoeing and paddleboarding, with equipment provided, while the PADI dive centre visits nine coral sites at 5–35 m and teaches beginners. Sunset cruises around the island and catch-and-release sport fishing at the nearby ocean drop-off are also offered.

Restaurants & bars

The main restaurant works on a farm-to-table basis, with most of its vegetables, fruit and dairy coming from the island itself. Breakfast and lunch are served by day and a five-course set menu in the evening, with themed nights through the week: Asian, Creole, a Japanese evening of sushi and sashimi, and a barbecue under the stars. The bar serves drinks and cocktails from morning until late, and a romantic dinner under the stars can be arranged.

Swimming

White-sand beaches circle the island, and every cottage has its own stretch of shore with sun loungers. The calm lagoon, sheltered by the reef and almost free of currents, is easy for swimming, and an infinity pool looks out over the Indian Ocean.

Rooms

The island has 22 free-standing cottages and one villa, all on the beachfront, with open-air bathrooms, garden courtyards and interiors in wood from the island’s workshop.

In each room

Every cottage has a sitting area, air conditioning and a ceiling fan, a telephone, a Nespresso machine and tea-making facilities, a mini fridge, a dressing table, a hairdryer, an iron and bathroom amenities, plus a bath, shower, outdoor shower, double vanity and bidet.
