Desert Rock

About this hotel

General information

Desert Rock is a mountain retreat set deep in the hinterland of the Red Sea coast, worked into a rocky massif above the desert. Some villas cling to ledges high on the slopes, others sit down in the valley floor, and the cave suites are tucked inside the rock itself. The architecture defers to the landscape: stone, light and desert space lead, and the buildings simply follow their lines.

The resort is made up of villas and suites, each with its own pool, and every villa comes with a dedicated Villa Host. Its pull is silence, seclusion and the untouched country around it: days bring guided climbs and hikes through the rock, evenings are for the night sky from The Observatory, a platform at the top of the massif. Six venues cover the dining, from Peruvian-inspired cooking at Basalt to wood-fire cuisine at Nyra.

Location

Desert Rock lies among the mountains inland of the Red Sea coast in Saudi Arabia. Red Sea International Airport is about a 20-minute scenic drive away, and the resort can also be reached by car using the coordinates it provides. Buggies take guests around the property.

Spa

The spa occupies its own Spa Pavilion, with a wellness programme offered alongside the treatments and a gym on site.

Sports & leisure

The mountains set the agenda. The resort's Adventure Center runs instructor-led climbing for beginners and seasoned climbers, guided hikes over rocky slopes and through valleys, scrambles that mix trekking with rock climbing, mountain programmes, nature walks with naturalists who explain the local flora and fauna, plus outings on e-bikes and electric quad bikes.

Dark desert skies make Desert Rock a natural place for astronomy, with stargazing sessions using binoculars and twilight walks. For slower hours there is a gym, a listening room and a vinyl bar, as well as private experiences arranged on request.

For children

The resort has a kids' club.

Restaurants & bars

Six venues range from restaurants to mountain-view lounges:

  • Basalt — à la carte breakfasts with Saudi and international dishes and a boulangerie counter of fresh pastries and breads, followed later in the day by contemporary South American cooking with Peruvian roots: seafood, grills and desserts
  • Nyra — wood-fire cuisine, with meat and seafood finished using smoking techniques
  • Wadi Pool & Grill — a Levantine poolside lunch of mezze, charcoal-grilled dishes and refreshing drinks
  • Mica — a lounge pouring signature blends, smoked infusions and herbal elixirs built on local flavours, with small plates
  • The Library — a calm lounge with mountain views serving speciality coffee, a long tea list, salads, sandwiches and signature gelato
  • The Observatory — a viewing platform high on the massif for evening drinks, pastries and the night sky; the Villa Host arranges transport up

In-villa dining and room service are also available.

Swimming

There is no sea at the resort; pools take its place. Every villa and suite has a private infinity pool with loungers, the larger villas adding a pool deck and daybed, while the largest villa also has a separate plunge pool off the main bathroom. The shared Wadi Pool is open to all guests.

Rooms

Eight types of villa and suite with one, two or three bedrooms sit in the valley, on the cliffs and inside the massif, each with its own pool and Villa Host.

Each villa has a living area with a bar unit, a bathroom with double vanity, bathtub and shower, air conditioning, Wi-Fi, TV, telephone, safe, hairdryer, slippers and room service.
